Controlled atmosphere packaging (CAP) film made using K-Resin® DK11 for better fruit and vegetable preservation

About the image: Actual images of bananas packed with and without CAP film made using K-Resin® DK11 after four days of transportation from Yunnan to Shanghai, approximately 2,400km (image courtesy of INEOS Styrolution, 2022)

  • K-Resin® DK11: Combines excellent clarity with good toughness and high gas permeability
  • Optimised styrenic material for CAP film packaging ideal for extending shelf life of perishables
  • Compliant with food contact regulations[1]
INEOS Styrolution, the global leader in styrenics, has today announced its K-Resin® DK11 to be the material of choice for controlled atmosphere packaging (CAP) film applications.

K-Resin DK11 had proven to be the ideal material for Chinese banana farmers who had been looking for a suitable packaging solution that enabled controlled ripening of bananas during transportation from Yunnan to other coastal regions in China.

The ideal packaging solution is expected to preserve the freshness, colour and integrity of the fruit. In addition, it is required to allow the fruit to organically ripen, without the use of preservatives or ripener during transportation.

K-Resin DK11 is easily processed to give tough, high clarity film. It combines good thermal stability with high gas permeability, making it the ideal material of choice for CAP film packaging for fruits and vegetables, while extending their shelf life.

“We are extremely pleased with the performance of the CAP film produced using our K-Resin DK11. The excellent gas permeability of this film allows for the organic ripening of the bananas, while preserving the shelf life of the fruit especially during long cross-city state journeys,” comments Jary Liao, Director, Transparent Specialties, Asia-Pacific. “With the increasing tightening of plastic food contact safety compliance regulations both in China and globally, INEOS Styrolution continues to renew, improve and differentiate our portfolio and services to generate further value, ensuring fresh fruits and vegetables to the people in China and the rest of the world”.

K-Resin is INEOS Styrolution’s crystal-clear thermoplastic styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBC) and is known for its unique blend of sparkling clarity, impact toughness, stiffness, and exceptional gloss. With international food contact regulations compliance[2], our K-Resin range is an excellent material choice for applications requiring food-contact compliance. It has been used in a wide variety of applications ranging from packaging and toys to medical components and displays for over 40 years.

INEOS Styrolution’s range of crystal-clear thermoplastic SBC, namely K-Resin, Styrolux® and Styroflex®, offers an impressive combination of high transparency, brilliance and impact resistance making them suitable for use in applications across various industries including healthcare, packaging, and toys.

Up to 99% carbon footprint reduction from new INEOS Styrolution bio-attributed styrenics

  • 77% to 99% carbon footprint reduction
  • ISCC PLUS certified mass balance approach
  • New drop-in solutions embrace NAS® ECO and Luran® ECO product ranges
INEOS Styrolution, the global leader in styrenics, has introduced today new NAS® ECO and Luran® ECO sustainable drop-in solutions based on a mass balance process certified by ISCC PLUS.

The products are based on styrene being produced using renewable feedstock that is not in competition with food production, such as kitchen waste and wood waste.

The carbon footprint reduction for the new products varies between 77% and 99% when compared to the respective fossil-based products, depending on the amount of renewable feedstock used to produce a material[1].

The new materials, Luran ECO and NAS ECO, have identical physical and mechanical properties as their fossil-based counterparts Luran and NAS, enabling a direct replacement for customers seeking to step up their sustainability efforts.

Eike Jahnke, Vice President Specialties EMEA, comments: “These new solutions expand our portfolio of mass balance based specialty styrenics products. Together with our previously introduced Styrolux® ECO and Styroflex® ECO families, we can now offer our customers sustainable drop-in solutions for four of our specialty product families.”

Production of the new materials will be in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Luran and NAS are transparent styrenics specialty materials offered by INEOS Styrolution.

Luran is a styrene acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) featuring a well-balanced property profile ranging from good transparency and excellent chemical resistance to high stiffness, extraordinary heat resistance as well as very good dimensional stability. These make them a material of choice for a variety of household and cosmetics packaging applications.

NAS is a stiff, amorphous styrene methyl methacrylate (SMMA) copolymer for demanding applications requiring excellent transparency such as water tanks, displays, food containers or boxes. NAS features an outstanding water-clear appearance, an extreme low haze as well as a good thermal and chemical resistance. The optical properties of NAS are on a similar level as PMMA, while NAS has a density and processing advantage compared to acrylic solutions.
