Repsol invests €4.5 million to expand our manufacturing capacity of fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene compounds

We have expanded our Polidux plant with a new fiberglass line. These high-value-added and highly specialized materials are in high demand in technical sectors. The fiberglass-reinforced compounds that will be produced on the new line are specially designed for the automotive sector.

Today we have inaugurated a new production line at Polidux, our compounding plant located in Monzón, Huesca. This new line, intended for the manufacture of fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene compounds, will allow for an almost 30% increase in the production of these highly specialized, high-value-added materials, which are in high demand in technical sectors.

The new line has required an investment of 4.5 million euros, being the most relevant investment in the plant since 2006. The fiberglass-reinforced compounds that will be produced in the new line are specially designed for the automotive sector.

In this way, we consolidate our Monzón factory as a strategic plant for our growth in the market for differentiated products with high added value. At the same time, we reaffirm our commitment to differentiation and the circular economy with the recent obtaining of the UNE-EN 15343 certification also in this factory. This standard certifies the traceability and content of recycled material in the polypropylene compounds that we market under the Repsol Reciclex® brand, with up to 80% recycled material.

Repsol will invest over €35 M to build an XLPE plant to manufacture HV and EHV cables

We plan to build an off-line plant in Tarragona for Cross-linkable Polyethylene (XLPE) for insulation of high and extra-high voltage cables. The plant, scheduled to start in mid-2024, will have a manufacturing capacity of up to 27 kt/y. The new range will include seven grades for the water-tree-retardant (WTR), high voltage (HV), extra high voltage (EHV), and direct current (DC) segments.

We will build a new plant in Tarragona, with an investment of over €35 M to manufacture Cross-linkable Polyethylene (XLPE), a polymer used in cable insulation, located between the conductor and the outer protective layers.

The plant will have an annual capacity of 27 kt and is scheduled to start in mid-2024. The LSHC™ (Linear Short Hyperclean) new technology selected for the plant from Buss AG, will provide a product with very competitive properties, enabling us to complete our product range for cables by incorporating materials for HV (high voltage) and EHV (extra-high voltage) cables. HV and EHV are the most differentiated segments in cable insulation and would place Repsol among the leading producers of polyethylene for cables.

The new range will be made up of seven grades, based on a base polymer that we already produce – low density polyethylene (LDPE) or EBA copolymers – will target the Water-Tree-Retardant (WTR), HV, EVH, and direct current (DC) segments.

Considered a highly specialized material, after startup in June 2024, our XLPE will be shipped to state-of-the-art cable manufacturing facilities in different parts of the world to ensure the highest international standards in the HV and EHV cables produced.

We reaffirm with this new investment our longstanding commitment to the wire & cable segment and to our cable manufacturing clients.

Repsol to invest €105 M to build the first UHMWPE plant in Spain

We plan to build the new ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plant at our Industrial Site in Puertollano. The plant, scheduled to start up at the end of 2024, will have an annual manufacturing capacity of up to 15 kt. It will use DSM’s technology, which will allow Repsol to become a UHMWPE producer with robust and proven technology. The UHMWPE, considered a “super polymer”, is a highly differentiated material with high tenacity, superior to steel, high impact resistance, and self-lubrication capacity.
 
We will build a new ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plant in Puertollano. The plant will be the first on the Iberian Peninsula capable of manufacturing UHMWPE. It will use DSM's technology, the Netherlands-based UHMWPE long-time producer.

The construction of the new plant, which will have an annual capacity of 15 kt/y of UHMWPE, will entail an investment of 105 million euros. It is estimated to be operational by the end of 2024. This investment will allow us to place an initial supply range of four grades in the market. This broad range of molecular weights will meet the needs of the main applications such as Li-Ion battery separators, construction profiles, coatings, military and personal defense, and medical applications such as prostheses, implants, or dialysis filters.

Thus, we advance in our commitment to offering new solutions to contribute to our clients' competitiveness, enhancing our product portfolio with this "super polymer," a highly differentiated material with toughness higher than steel, high impact resistance, and self-lubricating capability, among other properties.
