Ampacet SunChill™ color masterbatch reduces heat build-up in dark plastics exposed to sunlight

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader,  has introduced SunChill color masterbatches designed to decrease the thermal load of dark plastic items exposed to sunlight and hot weather conditions.

Dark-colored plastics are known to heat up when exposed to sunlight because dark pigments absorb most of the infrared wavelengths and convert them into heat energy.  The darker the color, the warmer the plastic item becomes when exposed to the sunlight, with black being the ultimate heat absorber.  Widely used for outdoor applications, such as floor tiles,  construction products and furniture, dark plastics can become uncomfortably hot for use by consumers when left out in the sun. 

When used to color dark outdoor plastic items,  Ampacet SunChill exhibits much lower infrared wavelength absorption and limits heat build-up of plastics exposed to the sun when compared to conventional color solutions.  As a result, colored articles remain cooler and more comfortable to touch during hot periods of the year.

Ampacet introduces UVProtectTM, a new generation of UV stabilizers for outdoor plastics

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader, introduces UVProtectTM, a new generation of long-lasting UV stabilizers designed to extend the life of polyolefin-based plastics used in outdoor applications.

Playground equipment, furniture, vehicles and other plastic items used outdoors are often exposed to severe weather conditions and the negative impact of sunlight.  When exposed to UV radiation, nearly all polymers degrade, leading to deterioration of physical and mechanical properties such as loss of elongation and tensile strength, discoloration and cracking.  UV stabilizers, such as UVProtect, when added to polymers, extend the life of plastic parts by protecting them from sun exposure. Proper selection of UV stabilizers, however, is crucial to provide appropriate protection to plastic items.

Ampacet UVProtect 1248 efficiently protects the critical physical and mechanical properties of outdoor polyolefin-based plastic items with long-term exposure to UV radiation. UVProtect dramatically extends the life of plastic items, outperforming commonly-used hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) with the same additive content.  It achieves similar results as HALS with half the additive content, thus enabling reduction of the letdown ratio for better process control.

Ampacet extends REC-NIR-BLACK range with NIR-detectable masterbatch for black flexible applications

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader, has added REC-NIR-BLACK PE 512 for black flexible applications to its carbon-free REC-NIR-BLACK masterbatch range.

REC-NIR-BLACK masterbatches are near-infrared (NIR) transparent to allow sorting with near-infrared optical sensors. The reuse and recycling of black packaging waste supports Circular Economy initiatives.

REC-NIR-BLACK PE 512 is NIR-detectable, while providing a high level of opacity for black flexible packaging. Products made with this NIR-transparent masterbatch solution are oriented to the polyethylene flow when using a sorting model suitable for dark plastics. REC-NIR-BLACK PE 512 is suitable exclusively for indoor use because, unlike conventional carbon black masterbatches, it does not provide a stabilizing effect against UV degradation. 

To recycle plastic packaging into useable resins, plastic waste is presorted by resin type at plastic recovery facilities. Presorting, an essential and challenging step, especially with the various characteristics of each resin type, results in a pure stream of resin. In most recovery facilities, automated sorting technologies use near-infrared optical sorters.

Near-infrared optical sorting, however, cannot identify and separate plastics that contain carbon black, the most commonly-used black pigment. Carbon black absorbs a significant part of the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum, preventing the reflection of infrared light back to the sensor and consequently blocking the recognition of the resin’s fingerprint by a NIR scan.

While most black packaging cannot be sorted by recycling companies and can only be used for energy recovery, packaging using Ampacet’s NIR-detectable black masterbatch products can be scanned by near-infrared technology for automated sorting at recovery facilities.

Ampacet opens new production facility in Italy

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader, has opened a new production plant in Brembate (BG), Italy in response to increased product demand. The new site doubles additive capacity and all lines are up and running.

“This new site with its cutting-edge technologies will further improve the service provided to our customers by speeding up the innovation process, thus helping to bring products to market more quickly. Pellenc ST and Ampacet, respectively global leaders in sensor-based sorting solutions and Masterbatch solutions, collaborated on sorting studies to optimize the recyclability of dark PET packaging on existing recycling lines. Since 2021, COTREP has published a test protocol assessing dark packaging detectability in optical sorting. COTREP is a Technical Committee for the recyclability of household Plastic Packaging in France joining forces with Citeo, Elipso, SRP and Valorplast.

Standard black polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging poses several challenges for the recycling value chain.

Plastics recycling starts with the sorting of mixed plastic wastes into separate mono-material streams (e.g. PET, PE, PP, PS...) at material recovery facilities (MRFs). These facilities use near-infrared (NIR) technology to recognize the resin type used in plastic articles. The key limitation to near infrared optical sorting is its inability to identify and separate plastics that contain carbon black, the most commonly used black pigment. Carbon black absorbs the most part of the infrared spectrum, preventing the backscattering of infrared light to the NIR spectrometer and consequently blocking the recognition of the resin’s fingerprint. Such mixed plastic packaging ends in a residual fraction, which is not recycled but disposed mainly via incineration.

Ampacet has developed alternative black masterbatch solutions promoted under the REC-NIR-BLACK brand. Being near-infrared (NIR) transparent, packaging made with REC-NIR-BLACK can be sorted using conventional NIR optical technologies and effectively recycled thus participating in the Circular Economy.

Successful dynamic NIR sorting tests had been performed by Pellenc ST in the past on black bottles containing REC-NIR-BLACK following COTREP’s sorting protocol for polyolefin packaging enabling Ampacet to pass the test for black masterbatch solutions using these types of resins. But besides the ability to be detected by NIR and oriented to the proper stream, PET packaging needs to be sorted in two distinct flows: clear transparent and mixed colors items. The mechanical and optical characteristics of the recycled clear PET flakes obtained from the transparent flow are generally close to the virgin resin. Clear r-PET flakes are used in a wide variety of high-value applications intended for contact with food like water bottles and food containers.

Although PET recyclers are equipped with visible optical sensors to sort PET streams by colors, the identification of transparent and dark plastic can be problematic. The reason is that the color detection of the PET container is realized on black conveyor belts. Therefore, the visible domain spectrometers, installed above the conveyor belts, do not necessarily distinguish dark containers from transparent ones and consequently direct the dark packaging with the transparent stream. The sorting tests carried out by Pellenc ST on PET containers colored with Ampacet REC-NIR-BLACK solutions allowed to establish the optimal conditions and adjust the computer algorithm to differentiate accurately transparent packaging items from dark ones and direct them to the correct streams. To do so, Pellenc ST used its sorting loop that mimics the industrial conditions: same mixed plastic stream, throughput. Tests were carried out using both the previous version of the machine and the brand-new optical sorter called Mistral+ CONNECT.

Ampacet REVIVE 324: Compatibilizer for polyethylene & mixed-polyolefin recycling streams

Circular Economy is a mandate for the plastic packaging industry to meet the recycling targets set at European and domestic levels. A minimum recycled content in new packaging is often imposed via taxes or requested by brand-owners and convertors to full-fill their circular economy commitments.

While plastic packaging design, waste collection, polymer sorting and recycling process continuously evolve to improve quality of recycled resin, post-consumer recycled polyethylene is often contaminated with polypropylene or ends in mixed-polyolefin streams.

Manufacturing flexible packaging using recycled polyethylene or mixed-polyolefin material can be challenging in achieving the minimum recycled content required, while preserving aesthetics, mechanical properties as well as operability.

Ampacet extended REVIVETM portfolio by adding REVIVE 324, a compatibilizer for polyethylene and mixed-polyolefin recycling streams. REVIVE 324 improves polyethylene/polypropylene blend homogeneity, mechanical properties, aesthetics and surface smoothness. Ampacet introduces compatibilizer masterbatch REVIVETM 962 E: allows recycling of multi-material packaging

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader, has introduced REVIVETM 962 E, a compatibilizer masterbatch that enables recycling of multi-material packaging made of polyolefin and technical polymer components into quality film applications.

While most flexible, mono-material packaging films –polyethylene and polypropylene –can easily be mechanically recycled, recycling multi-material packaging structures presents challenges. Food products, for example, may require multi-material packaging to provide gas barrier functionality that protects packaged food, extends shelf life and reduces food waste. Disturbing the polyolefin recycling stream with non-polyolefin components must be avoided when recycling multi-material packaging films in order to ensure a level of quality that allows upcycling into new packaging.

Ampacet now offers halogen-free flame retardant masterbatches, HALOFREE 709 and HALOFREE 229, featuring outstanding flame retardancy in polyethylene film at low addition rates and compliance with health and environmental safety protection regulations. Ampacet HALOFREE 709 is rated “excellent” in flammability testing classifications including B2 (DIN4102), VTM0 (UL94) and Euroclass close equivalents. Ampacet introduces BioRange+ TUV OK Compost certified masterbatch portfolio

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader,  announces the launch of BioRange+ masterbatch solutions designed for compostable plastic applications.

The BioRange+ portfolio includes white, black and color as well as additive masterbatches that have received TUV OK Compost INDUSTRIAL certification. Ampacet doubles color production capacity in Luxembourg

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader, announces the doubling of its production capacity with the addition of new color production lines in Dudelange, Luxembourg.

The new facility in Dudelange currently houses Ampacet’s European headquarters, the Color Center of Excellence and a state-of-the-art research and development laboratory. Ampacet opened new color production lines in Dudelange, Luxembourg in 2017 and added two color production lines there in 2019.

The investment, part of Ampacet’s strategy of continuous improvement of the overall customer experience, will reduce lead times and offer additional product delivery flexibility. Ampacet Introduces Nucleating Agent for Improved Stiffness of Injection Molded and Extruded Polypropylene Parts

Ampacet, a global masterbatch leader,  has introduced Nucleant PP 4000389-E, a nucleating additive designed to improve polypropylene mechanical properties and stiffness.

Lightweighting, a key sustainability trend, reduces the thickness of plastic parts to decrease the use of polymers. However, this can lead to more fragile parts that are unable to withstand normal use. To enhance the mechanical properties of polypropylene, mineral fillers are traditionally used, imparting stiffness and dimensional stability to the end product. Mineral fillers, however, may significantly alter polypropylene density affecting recyclability,  as some recycling facilities separate polymers applying the sink-float separation method in which lighter-weight materials such as polypropylene float and denser plastics such as PET sink.

Ampacet Nucleant PP 4000389-E, a new nucleating additive, improves the mechanical properties and stiffness of injected or thermoformed polypropylene parts without affecting polymer density or transparency.  It allows the downgauging of polypropylene parts and end products while maintaining the same rigidity, and is suitable for both virgin and post-consumer resins. Because it doesn’t alter the density of the polymer,  use of Ampacet Nucleant PP 4000389-E doesn’t prevent flotation separation at recycling facilities, enabling customers to meet sustainability goals.  

 Suitable for opaque or transparent applications, Ampacet Nucleant PP 4000389-E features excellent optical properties, including improved clarity and reduced haze when used for transparent parts.

The most common thermoplastic in the world, polyethylene terephtalate (PET) polymer is widely used for trays and containers for food and beverage packaging as well as for household, healthcare and cosmetics products. Furthermore, polyethylene terephtalate is by far the most recycled plastic packaging material in Europe.

 Because it is fully recyclable, collected PET bottles or trays are easily reprocessed into new PET bottles and containers or thermoformed packaging in closed-loop cycles. PET can be remelted as often as required and incorporated into virgin polymer.
