Nofia Phosphonates for GF PC Applications

Nofia HM1100, HM9000, and copolymers are a family of phosphonate polymeric flame retardant (FR) materials that are suitable for flame retarding glass-reinforced (GF) polycarbonate (PC). The Nofia phosphonates enable the production of very thin parts with very high glass fiber loadings that still can obtain a UL94 V0 rating, while maintaining high heat distortion temperatures (HDT). Furthermore, relatively high melt flows can be obtained, which improves injection molding of the highly filled compounds.

Nofia Phosphonates for PC Applications

Nofia poly(phosphonate-co-carbonates) have inherent flame retardant (FR) properties and make
it now possible to produce thin FR (UL94 VTM0 down to 0.2 mm) polycarbonate (PC)
compounds for film, sheet, and injection molding applications.
Sample testing protocols include: UL94 V0 and VTM0, NF P92-507 (“M1 test”), DIN 4102-1,
ASTM E162 and E84, US and Canadian Rail standards, EN45545, FAR 25:853, and FMVSS 302.

FRX Polymers® Announces Availability of Nofia® Non-Halogenated Flame Retardants for Low-VOC Polyurethane Foam for Auto Interiors

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Dec. 25, 2018 – FRX Polymers Inc., the global leader in polymeric halogen-free flame retardant (FR) solutions, has announced the availability of its Nofia® phosphonates for use in the production of low volatile organic compound (VOC) polyurethane (PUR) foam for automotive interior applications. These low-VOC PUR flexible foam products deliver significant improvements in vehicle interior air quality.

VOCs are inherently present in newly produced components for automotive interiors. Polyurethane foam with small molecule flame retardants or other volatile additives can increase VOC level, according to FRX Polymers. These volatile components vaporize into the interior, creating odor and fogging.

The growth of the automobile industry in Asia is driving the effort to improve interior air quality. The Chinese government is placing strict regulations on the level of VOCs, according to FRX Polymers. Effective January 2019, the most stringent mandatory Chinese national standard, “Air quality assessment of passenger car” (GB/T 27630-201X), will reduce the maximum VOC limits for eight harmful substances by 10- 45%, and returning to its 2011 version.

Nofia phosphonate polymeric halogen-free FRs are a replacement for the small molecule volatile FR additives in PUR flexible foam products for automotive interiors and exteriors, eliminating unpleasant odors in vehicles while meeting other critical structural requirements. Due to its polymeric structure and reactivity with isocyanates which results in incorporation into the backbone of PUR products, Nofia FRs enable these foam products to meet various automotive fire safety standards as well as new total VOC and fogging standards from global car producers and regional in-vehicle air quality regulations. These include the new Chinese mandatory standard GB/T 27630-201X.

“Nofia flame retardants are a unique FR solution for auto interior parts made of polyurethane foams,” said Ken Wei, sales manager for FRX Polymers China. “Our team is working with various foam producers in Asia to meet new VOC regulations and our flame retardant products stand out from the competition, becoming the ‘go to’ FR solution for this market.”

Nofia FRs can be added into the manufacturing process in either powder form or as a liquid polyol solution, which significantly improves process efficiency and provides a sustainable solution.

FRX Polymers® Announces Availability of Nofia® Non-Halogenated Flame Retardants for UL 94-V0 High-Temperature PUR Foam

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Oct. 16th, 2018 – FRX Polymers Inc., the global leader in polymeric halogen-free flame retardant solutions, has announced the availability of its Nofia® non-halogenated polyphosphonates for use in UL 94 V-0 high-temperature polyurethane flexible foams for the transportation and electronics industries.

Nofia phosphonate oligomers serve as an excellent flame retardant (FR) and heat stabilizer in polyurethane flexible foam products, enabling them to meet the stringent UL 94 V-0 fire standard, as well as retain strong mechanical performance after severe thermal aging tests performed at 150°C. Key targeted applications include automotive under-the-hood parts, cushion/gaskets for electric vehicle battery packs, noise/vibration/ harshness foams for various transportation parts, and gaskets for electrical and electronics components with UL 94 V-0 requirements.

Nofia flame retardants can be added into the process in both powder form or as a liquid polyol solution, which significantly improves process efficiency and provides a more sustainable solution than the incumbent technologies (i.e., expanded graphite or halogenated flame retardants). “Our unique non-halogenated flame retardants have been proven to provide critical benefits beyond flame retardance across a range of applications,” said Ina Jiang, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FRX Polymers. “This new use is another example where Nofia polyphosphonates enable groundbreaking performance.”

As part of its development effort, FRX Polymers initially worked with customers who were searching for a replacement of expandable graphite used in a one-shot polyurethane foam process for automotive engine covers. Through close collaboration with its clients, the company has proven that Nofia FR is an outstanding choice which allows fire retardant polyurethane foam to handle higher temperatures, both in terms of peak temperature and continuous use temperature. Nofia FR also maintains good dimensional stability and the required mechanical performance after exposure to long-term heat aging.
