These can be processed into semi-finished products or injection molded.

Polyetherimide is a high strength amorphous thermoplastic polymer that is part of the polyimide family. PEI stands out in particular because of its low flammability (UL94: V-0) and shows at the same time a low smoke development. PEI has a continuous service temperature of up to 170 ° C.

Due to its first-class electrical insulation values, which are stable over a wide temperature and frequency range, this material is particularly suitable for use in the electronics industry. PEI components are also resistant to many chemicals and to hydrolysis. However, this also depends on the state of tension.

PEEK-Bearings

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is widely used in bearings that are subjected to high stress. PEEK itself has very good tribological properties, high temperature resistance, exceptional chemical resistance, and in general PEEK bearings have a longer life and lower maintenance intensity. Moreover, the self-lubricating property of PEEK makes the use of oil superfluous.

As a metal substitute PEEK is particularly suitable for lightweight. A bearing made of PEEK weighs much less than one made of metal. At very high stress, sliding speeds and / or temperatures, PEEK can also be modified with carbon or glass fibers. To improve the sliding properties of bearings, a PEEK-PTFE compound is suitable.

Slide bearings made of PEEK are used in modern mechanical engineering, in construction machines, in medical technology, in conveyor technology and in water turbines. PEEK bearings are also used in pumps, compressors or in offshore installations.

PEEK-Gears

Gears are traditionally made of metal, but PEEK gears have some key advantages. They are about ten times lighter, which helps to reduce weight and promote lightweight construction. It also means they contribute significantly to fuel saving in vehicles. Operating temperatures and continuous use quickly wear down conventional metal gears, and PEEK gears also generate lower the noise levels.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is often used for gears that are subjected to high stress. PEEK in itself has very good tribological properties, a high temperature resistance and an exceptional chemical resistance. In general, longer life and reduced maintenance intensity can be observed with PEEK gears. In addition, the self-lubricating property of PEEK makes the use of oil superfluous.

PEEK gears can replace conventional metal gears. Especially in agricultural equipment, vehicles and aircraft, the weight-reducing effect is paramount. But PEEK gears can also be used in machinery used in medical, the food and the electrical industry.

Polyetheretherketone is characterized by a very good biocompatibility for use in dentistry, making it very suitable as an implant. Furthermore, the modulus of elasticity is very similar to that of the human skeleton and it is radiolucent. The low hardness makes injury to the original teeth very unlikely and patients with metal allergies can be treated without any problems. In addition, implants made of PEEK have a low density and are easy to clean.

Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Polyimdes - BIEGLO expands at the top of the polymer-pyramid

Polyimdes (PI) are the most temperature resistant commercially available polymers. Best known for extremely demanding applications in aerospace and electronics is the thermosetting Polyimde (PI-s) shapes  as produced by Saint-Gobain under the ‘Meldin®7000-Series’. BIEGLO, many years distributor for Meldin®7000, is now enlarging its portfolio into thermoplastic Polyimide (TPI): BIEGLO is official distributor of AURUM® TPI-powder from the world-leading TPI-producer, MITSUI Chemcials of Japan. The advantages of TPIs are the high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 250°C for natural AURUM® PD 450.

Furthermore, BIEGLO now offers Polyamide-imide powder (PAI) to complete the portfolio of extremely high temperature-resistant and melt-processable products. PAI has to be annealed extensively to develop full mechanical potential.

BIEGLO fills the gap between the low-Tg PEEK (143°C) and the very costly PI-s that is available mainly as semi-finished ‘shape’ (rods, sheets and tubes). When the low Tg of PEEK is problematic but melt-processing should be applied, the TPIs have considerable advantages: ‘low cost’ for mass production and superior temperature performance compared to PEEK. Next to PEEK, Meldin® and Aurum® BIEGLO offers a range of raw-materials for the HPP-compounders.

Typical applications for TPI are high-performance washers, ball-bearing cages, dry bearings, seals and gears - where excellent mechanical & tribological properties as well as temperature resistance are paramount. Used in aviation, automotive and other industries, TPIs can be compounded and converted like other HPP-thermoplastics.

The growing demand for HPPs lead BIEGLO to focus entirely on the high-temperature segment. Sourcing from a global network of suppliers BIEGLO has been growing with CoPEEK from Panjin Zhongrun, PRC and the PI-shapes of the Meldin® 7000-Series from Saint-Gobain, USA. BIEGLO operates specialized web-shops www.PEEK-shop.de and www.POLYIMDE-shop.de to offer some of the standard HPP-products.

High-Performance Polymers in the Production of Food

BIEGLO – High Performance Polymers has several high-temperature plastics in their portfolio that are suitable for the application in the food industry. Especially the program of PEEK granules, compounds, and semi-finished goods are all certified according to FDA and EU 10/2011. PEEK is extremely resistant against sour and alkalic cleaning supplies, as well as against steam. A popular use is also CIP-cleaning.

The self-lubricating PEEK can also be used to produce bearings, assembly lines, gears and bushings. Moreover, through coatings the friction and wear can be notably reduced. Through specific compounding from PEEK, the efficiency and quality of final products can be increased. To improve food security, colour compounds can be equipped with metal-detectable additives.

Noteworthy is also that, along with PEEK, BIEGLO can also offer PPSU. This material is translucent and is used for baby bottles, kitchen containers or similar. It has a continuous working temperature of 160°C and is easy to sterilize.

The ASP-Plastics GmbH (a subsidiary of BIEGLO) offers semi-finished goods made of technical polymers, such as PET, POM, or UHMW-PE. Additionally here, food certificates, colors, and metal-detectability can be supplied.

Sustainable with recycled PEEK

Sustainability has always been an important part of BIEGLO – High Performance Polymers. Through the focus on Polyethertherketon (PEEK) in form of raw materials and shapes BIEGLO was able to find their niche. They discovered there was also a market for recycled PEEK.

PEEK-waste can be melted again and put into a new form. Processing waste, such as shavings or sprues do not need to be thrown away. They can be recycled according to quality requirements. Also compounds made of PEEK with glass- or carbon fibre can be recycled.

BIEGLO integrated sustainability in form of a subdivision into the company. PEEK is a valuable resource, whose lifecycle can be prolonged. Recycled PEEK can be considered for price sensitive projects or used instead other materials. PEEK-waste are bought back from BIEGLO-clients, as long as it is clean, dry and of one brand. These might be shavings, sprues, cuttings, etc. Thus BIEGLO was able to develop a whole cycle from granules over shapes to recycled PEEK for this material.

Meanwhile BIEGLO added with Polyetherimid (PEI) another thermoplast to their portfolio. There also is a market for PEI-waste. BIEGLO intends to expand the subdivision Sustainability. Therefore, BIEGLO is very interested in other recyclable polymers such as, PPS, PES, and PA12.

PEEK from a Save Harbour

For more than six years, BIEGLO has been importing PEEK raw materials from China. Last year, the company doubled their sales of PEEK once again. BIEGLO has various warehouses in Germany to supply customers quickly. They hold buffer-stocks of CoPEEK and selected PEEK semi-finished products made-in- Germany.

BIEGLO's clear concept contributes to the growing success:

·        reliability of supply

·        stability of price

·        constantly improved quality of products and services.

As most likely Europe's largest PEEK-distributor, BIEGLO continuously expands the portfolio of high-performance polymers. There is a wide range of functional and PEEK color compounds. Last but not least BIEGLO offers PEEK semi-finished products.

The management of BIEGLO GmbH commented "In times when people in the Anglo-Saxon area sail into the storm of planning-uncertainty, the business with Asian partners is gaining momentum through tailwind." They expect sales to boost again in 2019.

The BIEGLO GmbH is a distribution company for high-performance polymers from Hamburg. They built up several online shops, e.g. PEEK-Shop.de, Polyimid-shop.de, PAI-Shop.de, und PEI-Shop.de successfully.
