Unidirectional tape based on carbon fiber and polypropylene (TAFNEX™ CF-PP UD)

Thermoplastic matrices for composite solutions are becoming increasingly popular in various markets. Therefore, thermoplastic composite materials with carbon fibers (CFRTP) based on polar matrices like PA6 have been well developed, whereas non-polar polyolefin based CFRTP (e.g. with PP matrix) still have issues on interfacial surface between carbon fiber and polyolefin matrices, resulting in low durability and low mechanical properties.

Thus, by using the own expertise from LFT compounds (MOSTRON™), the Mitsui Chemicals Group developed the new product TAFNEX™ CF-PP UD,  an unidirectional fiber reinforced tape based on carbon fibers and PP with specially developed fiber bonding technology. In addition, the PP matrix compound has been modified during the development. Overall, this results in very good fiber-matrix adhesion and consequently high mechanical properties.

Feasibility processing studies have shown the high potential use of TAFNEX™ CF-PP UD for the automotive and sports industry.

ABSORTOMER

ABSORTOMER is a new olefin based polymer with molecular structure optimized at nano-meter level with the use of Mitsui Chemicals’ long-cultivated catalyst technology. At low temperature, it has a hard feel and keep its shape.

When heated, it changes to a soft, flexible feel. Absortomer is supplied in pellet form. When mixing different materials during moulding, the following features and properties can be achieved. This can contribute to the development of unique products.

ADMER

ADMER™ resins are modified polyolefins with functional groups, designed to bond to a variety of polyolefins, ionomers, polyamides, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), polyester (e.g. PET) and metals. They serve as tie layer in multilayer applications such as films, sheets, bottles, tanks, pipes, tubes and others and, thus, help to combine the excellent properties of incompatible materials, as, for example, gas barrier resins and moisture barrier resins. 

ADMER™ resins are also used as coupling agents, compatibilizers and impact modifiers in various types of composites. ADMER™ adhesives are thermoplastics and can be as easily processed as any other polyolefin by (co-)extrusion or powder coating. MIPELON™

MIPELON™ is an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in the form of fine powder developed by Mitsui Chemicals. While the average particle size of conventional ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder is 150 to 200 μm, MIPELON™ can be successfully reduced to fine particles having an average particle size of 25 to 30 μm with our special polymerization technique and retaining its high molecular weight.

The addition of MIPELON™ to various resins, rubber, greases and coating materials results in improved self-lubrication, as well as in resistance to abrasion and chemicals because of the characteristics of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Good dispersion property of MIPELON™ results in exceptional mechanical properties.

TPX

TPX™ is a 4-methylpentene-1-based olefin copolymer.
TPX™ has a unique molecular structure. Although TPX™ is a crystalline olefin polymer, it shows transparency. Because of its excellent heat-resistance, release property and chemical resistance, TPX™ is used for industrial materials, including mandrels and sheaths in the manufacture of high-pressure rubber hose, mold cups to create LED light and other applications such as release film on FPC manufacturing process and release paper in the manufacture of synthetic leather.
Furthermore, TPX™ possesses a lowest density among thermoplastic polymers and then provides the molded articles with lower weight. This leads to reduce the environmental load for transportation. It is also noted that TPX™ is a halogen-free polymer denoted as environmentally-friendly material.
TPX™ is also used for food-related applications such as food wraps, food preservation packs, baking carton and microwave oven tableware.
