2-component injection molding with integrated plasma pretreatment: The solution for PP-TPU composites
The new InMould-Plasma® process from Plasmatreat not only significantly simplifies the processes in multi-component injection moulding. The innovative technology also makes it possible to securely bond polymer materials that were previously incompatible.
Plasmatreat developed the InMould-Plasma process together with the Plastics Technology Institute at the University of Paderborn. The aim of the cooperation was to significantly expand the possibilities of multi-component injection moulding. This has been successful: Through the integrated plasma process, the peel strength of e.g. thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polypropylene (PP) could be increased from 0 to 16 N/mm (according to VDI guideline 2019) in tests on 2-component peel test specimens.
At K 2019 visitors can follow the live production of a demonstrator on an ARBURG 2K Allrounder 570S injection moulding machine.

Plasma-SealTight®: Strong plastic-to-metal bonds in the injection molding process
The Plasma-SealTight® process enables the serial production of highly adhesive, media-tight metal-plastic compounds and makes further pretreatment steps superfluous.
Together with plastic compound manufacturer AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH, Plasmatreat has developed a process for hybrid injection-molded components which significantly improves bond adhesion and can be integrated into mass production lines. The atmospheric plasma coating Plasma-SealTight® lies at the heart of this development. This coating facilitates the formation of a covalently bonded joint between the two materials to create a very strong, media-tight hybrid compound.
At the Plasmatreat stand, visitors will experience how a two-row media-tight plug is produced on an ARBURG Allrounder 470A injection moulding machine using the Plasma-SealTight® process.
