ZSK Mc¹⁸ Twin Screw Extruder

Maximum torque for highest throughput

The ZSK Mc18 high performance twin screw extruder is a superlative product. With its torque of 18 Nm/cm3, it has made a name for itself on the market as a throughput champion for products with high torque requirement such as engineering plastics. The 30% increase in torque compared to the predecessor extruder model ZSK Mc PLUS leads to increases in throughput of up to 100%. Therefore the ZSK Mc18 twin screw extruder ensures production with maximum economic efficiency. The optimum price/performance ratio, the extremely energy-efficient operation, the wide range of applications, and the associated high level of flexibility of the machine are additional advantages.

With its Do/Di of 1.55, the ZSK Mc18 strikes just the right balance. It has proven itself in the processing of products with high torque requirements and enables reliable scale-up within the entire Mc18 twin screw extruder series. In addition, it is possible to scale-up and modernize the ZSK Mc PLUS series to the Mc18 series.

STS Mc¹¹ Extruder

Compounders for considerable increases in throughput

With its specific torque of 11.3 Nm/cm3 STS Mc11 compounders sets new standards: it features up to 27% higher throughput rates than the preceding model, while the higher degree of screw fill results in a decrease of melt temperature, thus improving compound quality. It incorporates the full process and quality know-how of Coperion.

The STS Mc11 series is exclusively equipped with European, Coperion branded gearboxes. Maximum screw speed has been increased from 800 to 900 rpm. To improve cleaning and facilitate quick changeovers for masterbatch applications, the STS twin screw extruder also features new hoppers with inserts and a redesigned die head. The screw shaft coupling is similar to the one long proven in the ZSK Mc18 series. The new, optimized base frame withstands torsion under maximum stress.

The STS Mc11 compounder covers most standard applications in process technology. It offers high productivity at an attractive price-performance ratio. Production of the STS Mc11 is in Nanjing, China, in compliance with CE directives. The result: A high-performance compounding system with low investment costs which ensures a fast return on investment. The modular design of the process section allows maximum flexibility in production at process lengths of 24 to 68 D.

Side devolatiliation ZS-EG / Side feeder ZS-B easy

Both twin screw extruders are equipped with ZS-B easy type side feeders as well as ZS-EG easy type side devolatilization. Both the ZS-B as well as the ZS-EG significantly reduce the time needed for maintenance tasks, thanks to the easy design that enables quick removal from and re-installation to the process section for cleaning or screw changes with just a few hand movements. For the easy design the ZSK connection barrel has been optimized for quick changing and allows all four mounting bolts to be simultaneously undone in a circular movement. What's more, the screw shafts can be completely loosened, cleaned, or changed in only a few moves. Cleaning and maintenance times are sharply reduced as a result.

Digital Solutions for Networked Plastics Production

As part of its new “C-Beyond 4.0” portfolio, Coperion will present digital concepts and applications for networked plastics production at K 2019 (16-23 October, Dusseldorf) at Booth B19 in Hall 14. Among these are a concept study addressing a uniform user interface for human-machine interfaces (graphical user interfaces or GUIs for short). These can depict Industry 4.0 functionalities and are being gradually implemented into all Coperion extruders, compounding machines, and material handling systems for the compounding industry. The intelligent support programs (Smart Machine Features) include intelligent diagnosis and monitoring functions that contribute to increased productivity and machine availability. They will be on display at the show on iPads, in an application similar to an app; in future, they will then be integrated into the GUI. The third highlight in this context is the C-Beyond 4.0 app which makes various applications available for the customer’s use: An overview of the installed machine components with relevant documentation, intelligent spare parts lists for the individual components with an ordering function, and the analysis of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). With this app, Coperion places important production data from the entire line at the production managers disposal within a sort of cockpit. The data is presented in a clear and easy-to-understand format for the purpose of monitoring and optimizing production. In so doing, Coperion enables an overall solution for the customer along the entire production process, even in the digital arena. Moreover, extruder manufacturer Coperion is implementing the OPC 40084 open interface, built on OPC UA, into its machines, enabling seamless use in heterogeneous, networked production environments.

User-Friendly User Interface
For the first time, the new GUI design creates a uniform look and feel across the various equipment families and provides an improved operator and user experience. Furthermore, the optimized user interface has been expanded to include additional functionalities. Its presentation focuses on the essential parameters, settings, and functions. Essential data regarding speed, throughput, melt temperature, head pressure, “specific energy input” or “next tasks” can be identified at a glance.

Reducing the complexity, together with the clear, optical structure, provides intuitive user guidance that eases users’ onboarding and reduces the risk of operator error. In addition, functions such as user-specific registration and profiles (multilevel user concept), note function / digital shift log, as well as simple recipe management were integrated into the interface.

Intelligent Diagnosis and Monitoring Functions
Coperion extruder controls enable integration of intelligent functionalities, summarized under the heading Smart Machine Features. Among these functions, for example, are alarm-based handling recommendations. These display the most probable causes as well as corresponding solution approaches for rectifying errors when they arise. The machine can thus return to normal operation more quickly, saving time and costs.

Even implementation of predictive maintenance based on diagnostic data will be possible with these new functions, since maintenance intervals — i.e., for changing wear parts or utilities — are displayed. The required parts can then be procured using the C-Beyond 4.0 online platform. Operation-critical maintenance is displayed as a notification as well as in the overview list in the controls. In this manner, maintenance tasks can be better aggregated and planned to minimize machine downtimes. Coperion’s service department can be notified of pending maintenance via a Coperion ServiceBox built into the extruders and can work with the customer to create an optimized maintenance plan.

Moreover, these new functionalities enable process monitoring, directly programmed into the controls, in real time. No additional expensive sensors are necessary. Using the essential parameters on the basis of existing signals, process stability is evaluated to identify deviations and errors early on. Thus, for example, process influences regarding material feed, raw material properties or mechanical disruptions in the machine are detected. The long-term goal of intelligent process monitoring is to reduce costly sampling and quality analyses in the laboratory.

Furthermore, the Smart Machine Features encompass an intelligent empty run function for feeding systems. All or selected feeders run concurrently empty at a particular point in time. Intelligent communication between the extruder and feeder enables this function, making it possible for machine operators to save on both cleaning times at material changes as well as waste from remaining material in the feeder. In totaI, time expenditure and downtimes can be reduced, leading to clear cost savings for product changes.   

Production Monitoring and Optimization App
The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) app provides machine monitoring, delivering an overview of the machine’s overall efficiency to the involved production staff. It includes the performance, availability, and quality parameters. On this basis, the app provides production engineers or leaders with an extensively automated evaluation and visualization of the corresponding operational data, leading to increased transparency in production whereby problems such as maintenance backlogs can be identified early. Downtimes are classified into categories, which enables specific technical or organizational solutions. Within the app, Coperion contributes its comprehensive process experience to give customers a benchmark for performance in various processes, made possible with the aid of the “Coperion Performance Indicator”.

Along with the OEE app, Coperion will be showing an Intelligent Spare Parts Catalog, representing an evolution of the established MyCoperion customer portal.

Open Interfaces for Networked Production
Beginning in 2020, Coperion extruders’ controls will be equipped with OPC 40084 interfaces, uniform standard interfaces based on OPC UA for extruder communication with higher ranking manufacturing execution systems (MES). OPC UA is a platform-independent interoperability standard, providing secure and reliable data exchange in the field of industrial automation. The OPC 40084 specification has been jointly established by the umbrella organization of the European Plastics and Rubber Machinery Manufacturers Association (EUROMAP), the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), and leading machinery manufacturers for the plastics industry.

“Coperion is supporting the plastics industry on its path to digital production using Industry 4.0-capable control interfaces, interoperability, and intelligent diagnosis and monitoring functions. Beginning in January 2020, the Smart Machine Features will be integrated into the extruder controls. The new GUI will be implemented next year, first into our new extruder controls, and then further applications will follow. The new OEE app, as well as the Intelligent Spare Parts Catalog, will likewise be available to our customers”, explained Markus Schmudde, Leader of Research and Development, Compounding & Extrusion, at Coperion.

Coperion and Coperion K-Tron at K 2019 - Technologies for efficient plastics processing

In keeping with the motto “Making more out of your plastics”, Coperion and Coperion K-Tron will exhibit a variety of new and continuing developments of their technological solutions for plastics processing at K 2019 (16-23 October in Dusseldorf, Germany) at Booth B19 in Hall 14. Coperion will demonstrate how, by using energy and other resources responsibly, even plastics can be manufactured sustainably. The focus will be on recycling and upcycling, as well as processing of biodegradable plastics. General topics include further simplified handling, increased process efficiency and cost savings, as well as responsibility-conscious handling of resources both for complete turnkey systems as well as in the individual areas of compounding, pelletizing, feeding, and conveying. 

Front and center are two further developed high-end ZSK Mc18 type twin screw extruders with side feeders and side devolatilization. Moreover, Coperion will exhibit a representative of its high-performance SP strand pelletizers, now markedly improved in handling, as well as an especially reliable Smart Weigh Belt feeder SWB. Coperion K-Tron’s new V200 vibratory feeder will celebrate its European premiere and will be presented as part of a running system. Furthermore, Coperion will exhibit its energy-efficient FLUIDLIFT ecoblue® pneumatic conveying process, and will address the topic of technology solutions for integrating its products into customer-side Industry 4.0 environments.

New Generation of Strand Pelletizers for Improved Pellet Quality and Easier Handling

Coperion Pelletizing Technology GmbH, Offenbach, introduces improved dual bearing strand pelletizers which have been re-engineered based on field experience and current market demands.

The SP140, SP240 and SP340 models in the SP series have been equipped with a variety of enhanced features for easy, rapid handling and optimized pellet quality.  Moreover, Coperion has developed a new proprietary technology for cutting gap adjustment which impresses users with increased comfort and speed compared to tried and true classic systems. The new generation of the strand pelletizers will be on display for the first time at K 2019 (October 16-23, 2019, Düsseldorf/Germany) in hall 14 at booth 14B19.

FLUIDLIFT ecoblue® minimizes dust formation and increases energy efficiency of pneumatic conveying of pellets

Coperion’s newly developed FLUIDLIFT ecoblue® is a quality and efficiency-enhancing pneumatic conveying process for plastic pellets. Compared to conventional designs, the process generates much less dust and streamers, which improves the quality of the product and reduces waste. Its lower power consumption also allows plastics manufacturers and compounders to reduce their costs or correspondingly increase their throughput. Under industrial conditions it has been possible to reduce the formation of dust and streamers by between 50% and 98%, at the same time lowering the pressure loss in the conveyor system and hence the necessary energy consumption by from 17% to 35%. Coperion will present its new process, which is suitable for both, new installations and retrofitting existing systems.
