Antimicrobial Fabric and Nonwoven Textiles

Today’s consumers demand high performance from textiles, regardless of whether the fabric is for apparel, home textiles, or outdoor applications. A purchasing decision is often based as much on the functional aspects of a fabric as on colour and texture. For this reason, antimicrobial fabric can offer added value to many different types of goods.

Bacteria, fungi and dust mites can wreak havoc and cause many different issues. They create odors in intimate and athletic wear, proliferate in medical environments, cause allergic reactions, and can be responsible for stains in upholstery and other household items.

Microbial growth also attacks outdoor textiles such as awnings, tents, or lawn furniture and leads to discoloration and degradation.

Antimicrobial Plastic & Polymers

Industrial and consumer polymers can be susceptible to microbial attack, causing undesirable effects such as staining, odours, and physical degradation.

Bacteria and fungi feed on most plastic and polymer additives – often leading to a potential loss of product integrity. This is particularly true for outdoor applications, where constant environmental stresses dramatically reduce the life of an untreated article.

Antimicrobial additives for polymers provides excellent benefits.

Antimicrobial Polyurethane Foam

What is Antimicrobial Polyurethane Foam?
Polyurethane foam can provide all the requirements for bacteria, mold, yeast and algae to grow and flourish.  Some polyurethane foams use “greener” ingredients that become a fantastic food source for microbes.  Other types of foam, thought to be naturally resistant to microbial growth, collect organic debris from the surrounding environment.

Both types of foam are prone to the damaging effects of microbial action over time.  Likewise, both foam types benefit from the use of antimicrobial additives.

Antimicrobial additives prevent unwanted effects of microbial growth, including mal-odors, staining and product degradation.  Their mode of action depends on the active ingredient used.

Antimicrobial Flooring, Carpet and Rugs

Flooring, carpets and rugs can frequently be a source of unwanted microbes.  Fungi can flourish in moist areas under soft flooring materials and create musty odours and loss of product integrity.

Carpet, area rugs and bathmats can trap dirt and moisture within the face fibres, leading to odours and staining from microbial growth if not properly cleaned or dried.

Hard surfaces become susceptible to attack when the topcoat and wear layers are worn away over time, whereas adhesives used in flooring can also support fungal growth which can lead to eventual discolouration and deterioration.

Antimicrobial flooring offers many benefits.

Antimicrobial Coatings

Antimicrobial coatings are coatings that are treated with an antimicrobial agent and applied to a surface to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew or algae.

PVC, latex, polyurethane, ink, paint, lacquer, powder coatings, etc. are coated onto hard surfaces or textiles to create goods with new properties or features.  Regardless of their nature, most coatings are susceptible to bacterial, fungal and/or algal growth.

Microbial attack affects these coatings by producing bacterial or musty fungal odours, staining and/or loss of inherent properties.  This leads to a reduced lifespan of the product.  Antimicrobial coatings add value and functionality to finished products by reducing odours, staining and by extending product life.
