TOPAS Advanced Polymers is a leading global supplier of high technology polymers used in a wide range of markets and products, from packaging films to medical devices to cell phones. We provide not just high-tech plastics, but strong technical support, enabling our customers to rapidly develop class-leading products that take full advantage of our unique products.

Our company's main product is the family of TOPAS® COC resins. These advanced polymers enable innovative product designs not feasible with other materials. Among their many attributes, TOPAS polymers deliver glass-like clarity, moisture barrier, stiffness and strength, excellent biocompatibility and good electrical insulation properties. The unique properties of TOPAS COC have led to a growing array of applications in healthcare, packaging, diagnostics and electronics.

The new TOPASBLEND® series of resins offers the benefits of polyolefins plus the high heat resistance of engineering plastics. Grades with HDT-B of up to 160°C are available. These new materials are being rolled out in the European market first, but are also available globally when requested.

TOPAS Advanced Polymers also sells norbornene, a cyclic olefin used in pharmaceutical intermediates, agricultural compounds, specialty fragrances and high-damping rubber. Our company is the world's largest supplier of this useful monomer and chemical intermediate, which is also used as a building block in the production of TOPAS COC.

Norbornene

TOPAS Advanced Polymers is the world's largest producer of the monomer and chemical intermediate norbornene (2-norbornene, norbornen, or norbornylene). This versatile bridged, unsaturated cyclic molecule is used in pharmaceutical intermediates, agricultural compounds, specialty fragrances and high-damping rubber. It is also used in the manufacture of TOPAS® COC polymers.

We offer both standard and high-purity versions of this bicyclic olefin. It is made by the Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and ethylene, two readily available hydrocarbons. The resulting molecule, a bicyclic olefin, is a bridged six-membered ring with a double bond on one side. The bridged ring puts extra strain on the double bond, making it highly reactive and useful in organic chemical synthesis. Reactions include ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), radical or cationic polymerization, and vinyl or addition polymerization.

TOPAS Advanced Polymers is a joint venture of Daicel Corporation and Polyplastics Co., Ltd. The global enterprise is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, with a U.S. subsidiary in Florence, KY. The company operates the world's largest COC plant in Oberhausen, Germany. We employ about 100 people working in research and development, marketing and sales, production, logistics and administration. TOPAS Advanced Polymers was launched in 2006 upon purchase of the TOPAS business from Ticona, a subsidiary of Celanese Corporation.
