Coiled Heaters (HotMicroCoil Heating Elements)

Our HotMicroCoil heating elements can be used in a wide variety of applications. Their high level of plasticity ideally suits them to the heating of hot runner nozzles and for accurately heating the contours of three-dimensional surfaces. Many of our customers order HotMicroCoil elements in their unformed state and perform the subsequent shaping work themselves, while others commission us to shape and fit the elements. A large number of ready-to-fit system solutions are available for plastic injection nozzles with clamping mechanisms, housing bezel, reflection tube or heat conduction sleeve.

In micro-injection moulding systems and high-performance tools with small cavity spacings, the preferred elements are MicroCoils, which are as thin as 1 mm, while where there is more space in the hot runner or the heat demand is higher, the more powerful HotCoils are used. With its larger cross-section, the latter type has its connection point at one end as standard, and a Type J or K thermocouple can also be integrated on request.

Freek Heat Sink Elements (patent)

The Freek heat transfer system especially addresses manufacturers and users who operated their hotrunner nozzles with cast-in heaters in the past and would like to stick to their engineering know-how without paying the high price of this former heater design. The standard material of our patent pending Freek heat transfer alternative is brass, with or without coating, basically with a slit. The slit allows the assembly of an external bendable thermocouple and facilitates the disassembly, e.g. in case of a revision and can be coiled over. This is not possible at competitor's solutions. Freek's tight coiling at the heater's ends provides a maximum possible power concentration (patented).

HotMicroCoils with Reflection Tube

Characteristics of our HotMicroCoils with reflection tube are easy mounting and variable heat distribution. Because of its direct touch and toleranced fit, the heater allows a very good heat transmission to the nozzle. In all our HotMicroCoils with reflection tube the assembly of a thermocouple is possible and recommended for bigger diameters and power.

Clamp Band Heaters

HotMicroCoils with clamp band are a highly demanded and very flexible nozzle fixing system, wherever enough space is given for the clamping mechanism and its actuation. In many injection moulding applications like PET preform production for drinks packaging there are industrial standards for nozzle diameters established, hence purpose-built screw and axial calmp band heaters available. For heating larger nozzles and bushings with high power scalable clamp bands with in-built HotCoils are a perfect choice.

Cartridge Heaters

Cartridge heaters are reasonably priced, robust and easy to install. As a rule they consist of a cylindrical stainless steel tube and thus provide a high corrosion prevention. There is a heating wire inside which is wound onto a ceramic core. The number of coils varies depending on the power. In order to avoid a short-circuit, the cartridge heater is filled with magnesium oxide and compressed afterwards. Highly compacted they reach a surface watt density of up to 50 W/cm² and withstand highest stress. In the plastics industry cartridge heaters are used in hot runners in order to temper thermoplasts during injection moulding processes. Other areas of applications for process heat are e. g. diecasting or continuous casting in which zinc or aluminium are processed. Further applications are to be found in mechanical as well as medical and laboratory engineering.

Square Cartridge Heaters for Heating Plates and Hot Surfaces

For heating metal plates or surfaces to temperatures higher than 200 °C common round cartridge heaters and tubular heaters mostly are the means of choice. The latter are normally pre-bent, then installed into grooves and finally cast in heat conductive compound. This procedure is complex and for small quantities very expensive. The same applies to deep-hole bores for cartridge heaters. Freek has dealt with this difficulty and developed soft, malleable square cartridge heaters. These don’t have to be pre-bent but can be processed straight and laid and pressed into rectangular grooves with simple tools. Doing so is economic also for the production of small quantities and the same time thermally highly efficient.
The advantages are obvious:

+    Simple plate manufacture due to rectangular groove geometry, no deep-hole drilling
+    Simple heater installation by bending and pressing along the plate surface
+    Complex plate geometries with bores and openings
+    Optimal heat transfer due to 75% surface contact
+    No casting with heat conductive compound necessary
+    Uniform temperature profiles due to thermally optimized groove layouts
+    High process temperatures up to 700°C
+    Square Cartridge Heaters also available with integrated thermocouple and power distribution

Silicone Heater Mats

Silicone heater mats are temperature resistant up to 200 °C (short-term up to 230 °C), with adhesive foil up to 180 °C.  In contrast to flexible heaters made of polyimide (Kapton) or polyester, silicone heaters can be produced in very large dimensions (max. 3000 x 955 mm). On the other hand polyimide heaters are significantly thinner and polyester heaters, when it comes to bigger quantities, unbeatable in price.

Application examples for silicone heater mats include: canteen kitchen technology / catering, anti-fog and anti-freeze applications, tool or plate heating in machines, 3D printers, laboratory equipment, composite materials repair, joint curing and much more.

When designing silicone heaters, the designer has almost unlimited degrees of freedom. This applies to the minimum and maximum dimensions within wide limits, as well as for shapes and cut-outs or holes and bushings of any kind. The excellent shape flexibility of silicone heaters enables heating of cylindrical, conical or rounded surfaces. It is also possible to preform the heating element during production. This is practiced, for example, for pipes, bodies with shape transitions or small deflection radii.

Polyimide (Kapton) heaters

Kapton is resistant up to 200°C as insulation material and up to 180°C with self-adhesive foil. In general, Kapton heaters are always more expensive than silicone or polyester heaters. Where the chemical resistance or the weight of the heater plays an important role, this material is the preferred solution.  Kapton's resistance to fungi, bacteria, ozone, weather, aging and most chemicals, acids and solvents is very good, making Kapton heaters an ideal solution for many critical applications. In addition, they are silicone-free and are known for their even heat distribution. The high voltage resistance of Kapton is very good and so the heating can become very thin. Due to the low thickness, heat transfer to the workpiece is improved and higher surface loads are possible.  Typical applications are: Laboratory technology, aircraft electronics, printing technology, diagnostic instruments, vacuum chambers, Medical equipment, medical applications.

Drum and Container Heaters

Our Drum and Container Heaters are an easy and actual aid to the warming of barrels and containers. Our Freek standard range for drum sizes 25 / 50 / 105 / 200 liters and 1000 liter IBC containers can be purchased in our online shop and is available from stock. In addition we are happy to customize bespoke heaters suiting your individual application.

HISD, HTSD, HSHP and IBC/B insulated heater jackets are particularly suited to permanent heating, e.g. of soaps, fats, varnishes and oil-based products, or respectively to reduce their viscosity. The maximum temperature is 90 °C resp. 220 °C depending on the jacket material. HSSD Side Drum Heaters are without thermal insulation, hence preferably used for very quick heating or defrosting of frozen products, thus allowing to empty the barrels rapidly. The maximum temperature for HSSD heaters is 120 °C.

All Freek drum and container heaters use a digital or analog thermostat, depending on application and preference.

Ceramic Infrared Emitters

Long Wave Ceramic Infrared Emitters are robust, standardized and very competitively priced. At 300 °C to 750 °C the ceramic heaters emit medium to long wave IR-radiation between 2 and 10 µm. Most plastics and many other materials absorb this wave length range very well. We supply two basic types: Solid Ceramic Emitters and Hollow Ceramic Emitters. The latter have a hollow space behind the heating coil that provides shorter heat-up and cool-down times and less heating losses to the rear. Both are available in standard dimensions either with or without thermocouples. Furthermore, matching accessories like reflectors are also available. These ensure that a radiation output of over 95 % can be directed to the front of the emitting surface.

Hollow Ceramic Emitters are manufactured with a rear hollow that serves as a thermal barrier. Less heat is emitted to the rear. This saves energy resources as well as wear and tear on the surrounding cabinet. And due to their small mass, heating times are generally reduced by approx. 40 % when compared to solid ceramic emitters. Thus these emitters can often be used for cyclic and interruptable processes.

Quartz Infrared Emitters

With Medium Wave Quartz Emitters the heating coil heats the quartz glass tube and thus activates the product. Depending on the temperature you can see a dark red up to a bright-orange glow. In the medium and long wave infrared range quartz infrared emitters have an emission range that can be compared with ceramic emitters. The short wave radiation ratio below 3 µm, that only quartz infrared emitters have, make the difference. Thus the application ranges of both emitter types are different despite many overlappings. Due to their lower mass they have shorter reaction times and are thus recommended also for cyclical or frequently interrupted operating processes. However, Quartz Emitters are more susceptible mechanically and not suitable for dusty or chemically aggressive environments.

Quartz Cassettes generate usable wave lengths between 1.5 and 8 µm and thus emit a glow during the operation. The cabinet is made of aluminized steel and has excellent reflection characteristics. The mounting is normally done via M5 threaded bolts. In order to reach a compatibility with ceramic emitters the quartz emitters can be manufactured with a terminal block. The cassette typically includes seven tubes. A thermocouple can be installed in the middle tube upon request.

Quartz Halogen Infrared Emitters

Short Wave Quartz Halogen Emitters are the infrared emitters with the highest radiation intensity (up to 20 W/cm²). They consist of coiled tungsten wire within an air-tight quartz glass filled with inert gas. Depending on the requested emission range, differently coiled heating coils are used. We also supply various holders and connections as required. However, as for halogen lamps the R7s holder is the predominant standard.

Heating and cooling times last only a few seconds. Thus quartz halogen emitters are most suitable for applications with short cycle times that have to be either started or cooled down quickly. What's more, the short-wave infrared emission reaches a higher penetration depth at most polymers, being advantageous in various applications like the curing of composits for example.

Reflectors made of aluminised steel sheet are available matching the emitters. To adjust the radiation even more accurately to the target material the glass can also be equipped with a coating made of ceramics or gold on the rear.

Heating Bands

Heating bands are the ideal solution for the heating of tubes an cylinders. UGL is a mica nozzle heater, made with a plastic-tight stainless steel casing and available with thermocouple on request. UGL is in many dimension available from stock. For all other dimensions (dia > 70 mm) you could use Micaplast. The Ceramic heating band type Keraplast is suitable specially for applications with high watt density and therefore for higher temperatures.
