Blown film extrusions
Blown film extrusion usually requires a corona treater to treat both external faces of polyethylene film (although polypropylene can also be treated). Corona treaters by Corona Supplies allow for guaranteed dyne levels, even at high slip additive levels, using a variety of easy to use and safe to operate designs.

Cast Film Extrusions
Cast film extrusion, treating both polypropylene and polyethylene films, usually requires greater power due to increased speeds and treat widths.

The elimination of any trace of treatment on the back side of films becomes more and more part of the modern specification. Reasons for this include blocking, set off and sealing.
The know-how required guaranteeing no backside treatment at any speed and any width up to 7-8 metres is readily available. "Where there is no air, there is no treat"; so a specific configuration of the backing roll, nip roll and spreader roll is vital. The appropriate configuration depends on circumstances, but if it is wrong it will add to web handling and tension control problems and not eliminate backside treatment.

Why do I have to treat my material on the printing press if its already been treated at extrusion?
Corona treatment raises the surface energy of substrates. However due to migration of additives to the substrates surface during storage, the corona effect can be reduced within hours, weeks or months, depending on storage conditions. When printing one must ensure that the dyne level of the substrate is high enough to promote adhesion of the inks onto the substrate, otherwise this can lead to disastrous consequences. To ensure this adhesion, it is highly recommended that flexographic and rotogravure printing presses have a corona treater installed.
Likewise, in the lamination process the surface energy of one substrate must be higher than the other substrate to promote adhesion and avoid delamination.
