We increase the circularity of our materials through a new grade of polypropylene

We advance in our commitment to the European Commission’s “Circular Plastics Alliance” (CPA) with a new polypropylene grade that enables the incorporation of plastic recycling into non-woven fabrics, on a joint development with our client DNT Nonwoven Fabrics.

We are launching our new Repsol 25RXPP086Y1E polypropylene grade (PP) for nonwoven fabric, developed jointly with our client DNT Nonwoven Fabrics. This new grade incorporates 25% of post-industrial recycled material, however, it does not alter the properties of the final product or affects the reliability of the process. With this project, we continue to drive the change towards the circular economy, in line with our commitment to the European Commission’s “Circular Plastics Alliance” (CPA), to increase the total volume of recycled plastic in the EU market to 10 million metric tons by 2025.

This new polypropylene grade allows incorporating recycled material into the nonwoven fabric, which will increase the circularity of the fiber sector, where DNT operates.

Additionally, we are evaluating diverse options to incorporate post-consumer recycled material, as well as new alternative applications in the PP sheet and strip sectors.

This milestone fulfills a new achievement within Repsol's circular economy strategy towards a more sustainable nonwoven fabric.

A leading authority in food safety

We are the first polyolefins producer to obtain the FSCC 22000 food safety certification in all our industrial complexes. In January 2018, we already obtained this certification for all plastic polymers produced at our Tarragona industrial site. The first ever granted to a polyolefin production center worldwide, which was later followed by our Puertollano and Sines complexes in December 2018 and March 2019, respectively.

To this end, we have implemented a robust and efficient food safety management system, to meet the requirements of regulators, the food sector, and final consumers. Clear evidence of our strong commitment to establishing food safety as a top priority.

Along this line, we are working on the Nature project to safeguard people’s safety and further increase sustainability. Nature goes beyond legal requirements to eliminate any additives with migration limits from our polyolefins.

All this confirms our commitment and leadership in food safety, which allows us to provide added value and offer advanced and specific solutions to our clients, the final consumer, and the environment.

We start marketing our first polyolefins with post-consumer recycled material from our Reciclex project

We promote the new circular economy of plastics with the production of a new range of polyolefins for bundle shrink film that incorporates plastic recycled material. This material is one of the first developments resulting from our agreement with the environmental services manager Saica Natur.

After achieving the industrial production, we put on the market our first material from our Reciclex project, Repsol 50RX2805, which allows incorporating plastic recycling in the film used as secondary packaging for the transport of packs of cans, bottles, cartons or cardboard boxes. The new material is formulated on the basis of a low density polyethylene (LDPE) compound with 50% post-consumer waste. This grade allows to incorporate recycled plastic on a commercial scale in an application where its presence was merely testimonial; and it unfolds new uses, without compromising the technical requirements in the final product.

With these new materials, we advance on our commitment to the circular economy and our value chain, putting into the market new solutions that will generate additional demand for plastic recycling, in line with our pledge to the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), launched by the European Commission in December 2018.

We are bestowed for the fourth consecutive year with the Best Polymer Producer for Europe Award

On this occasion, European Plastic Converters (EuPC) awarded us “Best LDPE Producer for Europe in 2019”. We are grateful for our customers' trust, who have judged our performance as polymer supplier, in terms of product quality, regulatory compliance, reliability in delivery, communication, and innovation.

On June 13, in Berlin, European Plastic Converters (EuPC), an association that brings together thousands of European plastic converters, awarded us Best LDPE Producer for Europe in 2019. The survey was carried out via secret vote from polymer customers throughout Europe.

We are proud to receive this recognition for the fourth consecutive year, which confirms our customers' trust over the last few years. This award reinforces our vision by which customers are and will remain our most valuable asset.

Pioneers in the industrial use of products from plastics' chemical recycling

Our intent is to boost the new Circular Economy model by promoting a large amount of plastic waste, that currently goes to landfill, transforming it into new raw materials for our petrochemical processes.

The Zero project is an initiative that aims to take advantage of the synthetic oils, obtained from the chemical recycling of plastic waste streams at the end of their life cycle, which cannot be recycled otherwise in a traditional mechanical way. We have been working with these products and new technologies, together with various companies, for quite some time, having managed to experimentally incorporate these products into our petrochemical process on an industrial scale at our Puertollano complex in 2015.

This technology grants Repsol a twofold opportunity to support the Circular Economy. Firstly, with an alternative raw material for the Refining business. Secondly, enabling our Chemical business to offer their clients polymers from a plastic to plastic source with comparable properties. A potential solution, based on the Circular Economy, to the problem of plastic waste to landfill, to close their life cycle.

The plastics’ chemical recycling alternatives, which are commencing their industrial scale-up, complement the already existing ones, such as, mechanical recycling. A line of work, in which we have also focused our efforts via our Reciclex project, to develop a product range that incorporates a percentage of recycled plastics in its formulation.

Repsol buys a stake in 3D printer company Recreus

Repsol has acquired 17% of the Spanish company Recreus through its strategic investment fund. Recreus produces and markets flexible and rigid thermoplastic filaments for 3D printing and is one of the most relevant manufacturers in that market through its well-known flexible filament brand, Filaflex.

With Repsol's collaboration, Recreus will accelerate its R&D, strengthen its position in the market and boost its medium and long-term expansion plan. The company, created in 2013 by Ignacio García, has demonstrated great innovative capability and knowledge of the most advanced solutions for 3D printing, which in turn has made it one of the market leaders.

Repsol is also developing modified polymers to be used as raw material in the different 3D printing technologies as part of its innovation and technology programs.

3D printing with elastic materials has many applications in multiple sectors and is rapidly spreading to new fields. Currently, Recreus is working with companies in advanced orthopedics and textiles to develop materials and printing processes specific to their markets.

Committed to the European Commission's initiative to promote recycled plastics

We have joined the "Circular Plastics Alliance" (CPA), launched by the European Commission to increase the volume of recycled plastic in the EU market. This commitment supports Repsol's strategy to promote the transition towards a new economic model based on the circular economy. This commitment follows the "Pact for the Circular Economy" Repsol signed in 2017, together with the main Spanish economic and social agents.

This initiative, launched by the European Commission on December 11th, 2018, aims to increase the volume of recycled plastic in the EU market to 10 million metric tons by 2025, compared to the 3.8 million metric tons recorded in 2016. This step confirms our commitment that, as a company, we promote among our customers and suppliers.

As a specific commitment of our Company in the CPA, we present the Reciclex project, which aims to address the shortage of recycled material with the consistent quality levels required by the market. This limitation is one of the barriers identified in order to increase the use of recycled plastic materials. With this project, we aim to reach new markets and more technically demanding final applications.

Additionally, we are working on an initiative to incorporate recycled plastics in the formulation of our 25 kg multilayer industrial bags, helping create a greater demand for recycled plastics directly.
