WellsBlock – Antiblock Additive Masterbatches

Blocking is an undesirable attraction between adjacent layers of film or sheet, often making it difficult to the separate individual layers. Certain polymers including, polyolefins and polyesters have an inherent tendency to block.

Blocking can occur during extrusion, conversion processes or during storage. Blocking can reduce packing efficiencies on automated and manual packing lines as it causes for example bags to be more difficult to open and stacks of thermoformed trays harder to separate.

The introduction of an antiblocking agent into a polymer will reduce the blocking tendency allowing films or sheets to be easily separated. The antiblocking agent will create a microscopic roughening of the film or sheet surface which reduces the available contact area between adjacent layers.

Compostable Compound

Wells Plastics is delighted to be able to show case the launch of a new material which has been developed over the last few years in partnership with the BioComposites Centre, Bangor University, UK and Dragon Plastics Limited, UK.

This new material has been specifically designed to produce beneficial mechanical properties and stability at high temperatures, whilst being fully compliant with the EN13432 compostability standard. It has been designed for situations where the operating temperature rules out other more common compostable materials due to issues such as cracking and deformation.

This material is ideal for applications where it might be subjected to temperatures approaching 100deg C such as coffee cup lids, coffee pods, plus many others.

The material is suitable for a wide range of processing techniques, such as blown and cast film extrusion, cast sheet extrusion, injection moulding and vacuum forming.

WellsAid - Polymer Processing Aid Additive Masterbatch

Wells Plastics polymer processing aids are designed to improve the melt processability and handling of high molecular weight polymers. They can also give finished articles improved aesthetic properties by removing flow marks and die lines thereby improving the parts gloss and clarity. Processing aids find use in a wide variety of applications from blown film to fibre, profile extrusion, pipe/tubing and cabling processes. In practical terms the use of a processing aid will assist in the elimination of melt fracture, can reduce die lip build up – resulting in less line cleaning, and can help in improving output rates and overall efficiencies. Desiccant masterbatches, or as sometimes referred to moisture scavengers, are materials that will attract and chemically bind moisture.

Desiccant Masterbatches  can offer a simple and economical way to eliminate moisture problems in plastics processing that can otherwise cause unattractive surface defects such as lensing, voiding, and splash marks in the finished product.

WellsStat - Antistatic Additive Masterbatch

Most plastics have a surface resistivity of 1015 -1016  Ω. sq. at this level they are good insulators and will be very effective at holding on to any static charge.

Benefits in the Reduction of Static electricity in Polymer Applications include increasing film manufacturing and packing efficiencies. Reducing dust attraction to the surface of plastic parts, such as bottles improving the aesthetics to consumers. Reducing ‘static’ shocks to personnel, reducing the risk of dust explosions.

 Wells Plastics have developed a range of additive masterbatches that can modify resistivity levels of plastics to values down to around 1010  Ω.sq.

At these levels the plastic component will allow any charge to decay to earth and therefore effectively control static related problems.

Slip additives are added to reduce the surface coefficient of friction of polymers and are used to enhance either processing or end applications. High and low level slip additives are available and immediate and slow acting and long term performance can be engineered into the masterbatch.

WellsFlam - Flame Retardant Additive Masterbatches and Compounds

As polymers consist of long chain hydrocarbons, unmodified, most thermoplastic materials are flammable and will burn readily given sufficient heat energy. Fires from plastics can be devastating.

In an ever demanding world where there are increasing pressures on cost reduction, component weight saving and improving production rates. These challenges can in certain applications be met by incorporating a blowing agent.
 
Blowing agents can allow the polymer processor to achieve weight reduction and use less raw materials by introducing a finely controlled cell structure within the polymer.

With the endothermic blowing agents, as part of their functionality, they will absorb heat energy from their surroundings. This, in injection moulding, lends itself ideally to reducing in mould cooling times and gives the processor the ability to dramatically reduce mould cycle times. in addition to a reduction in cooling time the moulder can benefit from a reduction in sinkage in the moulded part.

WellsStab - Antioxidant Additive Masterbatch

Polymeric materials are susceptible to oxidative degradation by the action of heat. Thermal degradation can occur during melt processing of the polymer, or during the service life of the finished component.

This degradation can result in a reduction in aesthetics, physical and mechanical properties or even discolouration of the part.
Antioxidant additives interfere with the oxidative cycle, thereby inhibiting the oxidative degradation process.
Antioxidants can be used effectively to:

1) Improve the processing of polymers.

2) Increase the service life of polymeric components.

Plastics materials can be susceptible to damage by the action of UV radiation. Sunlight is a powerful source of UV radiation and products such as garden furniture, heating oil tanks, and greenhouse films which are required  to spend extended periods outdoors as part of their service life will need protecting against this harmful degradation.

The use of a UV stabiliser systems allows parts for prolonged outdoor use, and in different climates with differing levels of UV light exposure, to be designed with a high level of confidence that they adequately fulfil their service life and performance requirements.

UV radiation is that it is not only potentially damaging to the polymer but also in packaging applications, potentially to the contents of the packaging. UV radiation not only comes from the sun, but can also come from artificial sources, such as fluorescent lighting in supermarkets. This could potentially cause undesirable changes to packaged goods e.g. colour change, and odour and flavour loss in foodstuffs. Adding a UV absorber will help protect the pack contents from damage by UV light.
