Anti-block

Anti-block additives, such as the Crodamide range, reduce blocking at the surface of polymer films and other plastic articles to allow easier processing and handling. Blocking is related to slip, however, slip involves the sliding of two surfaces over each other, blocking is the adhesion of those surfaces. Our anti-blocking additives reduce surface friction allowing easier separation of polymer surfaces. This can give an advantage in end-use applications such as opening plastic bags.
Crodamide anti-blocking additives
Traditionally inorganic anti-blocks such as silica are added to polymer films to reduce blocking and aid separation. However, these types of additives can cause a reduction of clarity in transparent films. Our anti-blocking additives work best in combination with low levels of inorganic anti-block, which results in improved clarity.

Anti-fog

Anti-fogging additives allow water to spread into a continuous and uniform transparent layer on the surface of films. This results in improved light transmission and transparency which has benefits in both agricultural and food packaging applications. 
 
How do anti-fogging additives work?
Fogging is a term used to describe the formation of small water droplets on the surface of transparent film. Fogging most commonly occurs when there is a temperature differential between the inside and outside of an enclosed atmosphere. Croda’s anti-fogging additives reduce surface tension which results in a thin and continuous layer of water of the surface.

Fogging in Agricultural Applications
Agricultural films are particularly challenging for anti-fogging additives as longevity of performance is key. Different climates as well as multi-layer films are some considerations that need to take place when deciding on which additive and addition level to use.

The use of anti-fogging additives in agricultural films give a number of benefits, including:
  • Improved light transmission resulting in higher plant growth rates, higher crop yield per plant and earlier crop maturity
  • Reduced burning of plants and crop spoilage
  • Reduced constant water dripping
Fogging in food packaging
Food packaging benefits from anti-fogging additives by maintaining its clarity and transparency so the contents can be clearly seen by the consumer at the point of sale. By adding anti-fogging additives to food packaging films, condensed water droplets are spread into a thin layer rather than droplets. In general, food packaging only require short-term anti-fogging performance that lasts the lifetime of the packaged food.

Anti-scratch

Anti-scratch additives are proving ever-more popular due to trends to lightweight with plastic and the need to preserve the look and feel of that plastic, particularly in the automotive industry. Composite Lubrication

Lubricant additives are using the production of wood plastic composites and other natural fibre composite materials to improve processing and increase output. The extrusion of wood and other natural fibre composite materials can be slow and energy consuming due to the dry nature of the material. Slip Additives

Slip additives offer a cost-effective solution to the problem of friction in polymers. Requiring only very low addition levels, typically 1000 ppm, slip additives reduce friction and allow ease of polymer handling and processing. The use of slip additives in plastics is a practical requirement for both the manufacturer and end-product consumer. UV Protection

Our UV protection additives are based on the unique patented technology of ultra-fine metal oxides, providing greater dispersion and clarity than ever before. Unlike organic UV absorbers, the easy-to-use stable dispersions deliver low migration and long-term UV protection.

Solasorb UV absorbers are aimed at protecting packaging contents or other media vulnerable to the effects of UV degradation. Oxidative Stability and Organoleptic Properties
Standard torque release additives can demonstrate poor oxidative stability that can result in poor odour, taste and taint. This can have a huge impact on the finished article, for example bottled water. Our range of highly stable additives have been shown to significantly reduce odour and taste issues in more challenging environments, such as in warmer climates or when exposure to UV light. In particular, Incroslip SL, is extremely stable and therefore less prone to oxidation. This can add value in caps and closure applications such as water bottle caps where taste and odour is critical.
