Dryflex Circular

TPEs with Recycled Content

There’s a shift happening in the polymer industry, we’re all becoming more conscious of the impact our products and operations are having on the environment. We’re more aware than ever of what happens to plastic products once we’ve finished using them, whether that’s recycling, incineration, landfill or even marine littering.

Increasing the use of recycled and renewable materials will help support the move to a circular economy model, by lowering demand on finite fossil-based virgin materials. Our customers have more demanding ‘green’ goals to meet and an increased sense of responsibility to use compounds with lower environmental impact. We share this feeling of responsibility, we’re working hard to turn waste into resource, taking recycled polymers and incorporating them into the Dryflex Circular range of Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs).

We’ve structured the Dryflex Circular range into different series based on the source of the recyclate. This helps give clarity about the material source and answer questions about what is included in calculations for declarations of recycled content. Currently there are series based on the following sources, as defined by ISO 14021:2016:

POST INDUSTRIAL RECYCLATE (PIR) (sometimes referred to as pre-consumer)
Material diverted from the waste stream during a manufacturing process. Excluded is reutilisation of materials such as rework, regrind or scrap generated in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it.

Material generated by households or by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product which can no longer be used for its intended purpose.

CURRENT SOURCE: (although we're continually investigating new sources and technologies)
The recyclate source for the Dryflex PCR grades includes recycled PP from end of life vehicles, including automotive interior and exterior applications. The recyclate source for the Dryflex PIR grades includes material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing of consumer, construction and household applications including baby products.

The Dryflex PCR grades are currently only available in black. They are targeted to automotive exteriors such as mudflaps, side-steps and wheel-arch liners. These grades can also be used for outdoor equipment such as lawnmower wheels or safety barriers. The Dryflex PIR grades are available in a natural colour, giving additional design possibilities. They are targeted to consumer goods, sports equipment, footwear, household and automotive applications. 

Like all of our materials, Dryflex Circular TPEs are rigorously tested from development to production, always keeping product quality at the heart of what we do.

We don’t spot buy, we treat recyclate the same as virgin raw materials, everything is bought to a specification. We don’t buy one-off deliveries of mixed scrap, all of our feedstocks are from consistent sources

Dryflex Green

TPE from renewable resources

What is Dryflex Green?
Dryflex Green is a family of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds containing raw materials from renewable resources such as plant and vegetable crops. So far we have developed several series with amounts of renewable content to over 90% (ASTM D 6866) with hardnesses from 15 Shore A to 55 Shore D.

Why use biobased?
Plastics are predominantly a by-product of oil, a diminishing resource. We are therefore seeing increasing demands to look at how we can work with biobased, renewable materials and bring new opportunities for sustainability.

Utilising raw materials that are derived from renewable vegetable crops, that are responsibly grown, can contribute to an improved LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which measures the environmental impact of all stages a product’s life from cradle to grave.

Crops for industrial use can be grown in poor soil which is unsuited to food crops, avoiding food crop displacement and improving biodiversity. The planting of these crops can also help to reduce CO2 levels.

Dryflex Interior

Dryflex Interior - TPEs that minimise emissions from VOCs

To help meet stricter requirements for Vehicle Interior Air Quality (VIAQ) and legislation regarding odour, fogging and VOC we have developed Dryflex Interior, a series of TPEs specifically optimised for low emissions.

They offer on average a 75% reduction in emissions compared to other TPEs for interior applications in the market. Representative grades have been tested externally at accredited test laboratories.

The materials display low odour with results 2.0 to 3.0 in standards such as VDA 270. According to gravimetric fogging standard ISO 6452 they achieve condensate < 1.0 mg and VOC from 60 to 120 μg/g and Fog from 200 to 600 μg/g. They have also passed additional interior tests for lightfastness, flammability and mechanical performance.

Applications include inlay mats in the dashboard, door, middle console or glove box. They are also well suited for thumb wheels, switches, cup holder liners, interior trim and HVAC components.

Dryflex Interior TPEs surpass existing requirements and future proof for emerging global emissions standards.

Dryflex TPV

Dryflex Thermoplastic Vulcanisates (TPV)

Thermoplastic Vulcanisate (TPV) compounds are high performance materials designed for demanding applications where improved durability, heat or fluid resistance are required.

They are composed of a highly vulcanised rubber phase dispersed throughout a thermoplastic matrix and combine the processing ease, efficiency and recyclability of a thermoplastic with the improved flexibility, low compression set and resistance to aggressive fluids of a vulcanised rubber.

They have seen strong growth in automotive seals, pipe seals, and other applications where a heat resistance of up to 135°C is required. Hardness values range typically from 45 Shore A to 50 Shore D. TPVs also lend themselves to underbonnet automotive applications where improved temperature and oil resistance is required.

Our aim is to supply a material that precisely matches application requirements. We are constantly testing new polymers, additives, stabilisers and other ingredients to create unique material combinations. We have engineered several Dryflex TPV series to suit different applications, with properties including flow characteristics, hardness, specific gravity, strength resistance and colour.

The Dryflex TPV range offers:

Combining the low weight, sustainability and feel of cork, with the processability of plastics...
The main quantity of natural cork which is harvested today is used as pressed cork or mixed with PU or rubber. The processing of this kind of cork can be expensive and require a lot of energy. We have developed a special manufacturing method to combine natural cork with thermoplastic raw materials. Meaning Lifocork can be processed using typical thermoplastic processing methods such as injection moulding, extrusion or thermoforming.

Cork - a renewable raw material
Cork is a natural product which comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. The removal of the bark does not harm the trees and the bark is only harvested after the first 20 years of growth. The removal stimulates a steady regeneration of the bark. Each cork tree provides on average 16 harvests over its 150-200 year lifespan.

Cork itself has a cell-like structure which is light and highly compressible. It is used in construction, sports, industrial and household applications.

Foamed Lifocork
It’s also possible to make foamed parts from Lifocork. This offers materials with very low densities (as low as 0.45 g/ccm) and therefore gives lightweight parts. The foamed Lifocork also gives a damping, shock absorbent effect, ideal for orthopaedic shoe lifts and inserts.

Lifocork can be processed using thermoplastic processing methods. In injection moulding it can be processed using standard equipment. Lifocork can also be processed in 2-component moulding. It has an excellent bond to TPE, PP and PE. Other processing methods include extrusion or thermoforming with a double belt press.

Lifocork is suitable for a wide range of applications, with new ideas being introduced every day. Its comfortable feel and non-slip texture make it a good choice for handles and grips, where it has been used in sports equipment, tools and household items. Lifocork has also been used to manufacture bowls, trays, boxes and plant pots and toys.

In 2K applications, the material can be overmoulded or co-extruded onto TPE, PP or PE. Allowing for sophisticated designs and enhancing consumer appeal with the integration of a soft-touch area.

Plates, belts, endless tapes and tech profiles can be manufactured from Lifocork via the extrusion process. You also get a damping effect for orthopaedic shoe lifts by foaming Lifocork.

We offer coloured Lifocork compounds or it can be easily coloured using a standard PE masterbatch, opening up even more design possibilities.

To address consumer concerns over the potential health and environmental risks of certain plasticizers used in the manufacture of PVC compounds, we have developed the Lifolit range to include several non phthalate alternatives.

This helps our customers to comply with tightening regulations governing the use of phthalates. Particularly in the toy and childcare market, where non phthalate compounds have become the industry standard in response to directives such as EU 2005/84/EC.

We work with a number of raw materials and plasticizers to give the best performance / cost ratio while always keeping in compliance with the different levels of phthalate use. This includes DEHP free PVC as well as grades that are considered low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Foamed PVC

For footwear and shoe sole applications we have developed several grades of foamed Lifolit PVC. They are foamed up to a density of 0.65g/cm3. With extrusion processing densities up to 0.45g/cm3. We also offer grades with no chemical blowing agents which can be processed at temperatures up to 195°C. They also have a very fine cell structure.

Antistatic, Conductive & Flame Retardant Grades

The Lifolit range includes antistatic and conductive PVC grades. Designed to dissipate electrical charges where EMI or static buildup could cause interference. We also offer flame retardant PVC compounds which comply with RoHS regulations.

PVC Blends

By blending nitrile rubber (NBR) or other polymers, such as thermoplastic polyurethane, we have created PVC compounds with very elastic properties. Our PVC blends also allow us to modify very specific properties such as abrasion and chemical resistance.

Epseal thermoplastic elastomers are custom made liner sealing compounds for the food and beverage industry. They are PVC free and conform to FDA and EU regulations. A range of compounds have been developed with series dedicated to different types of closures including crown corks, aluminium closures, both roll on and roll on pilfer proof, plastic closures, both out shell and in shell liner moulding.
