MELT FLOW INDEXER

A new generation of Melt Index Test

The mi-2.x Melt Flow Index series can carry out a single weight test according to ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238, procedures A, B and C. In addition it runs tests according to ASTM D 3364.
The mi-2.x easily performs melt-flow-rate (MFR), as well as melt-volume-rate (MVR) measurements. Due to the modular design of this system, it is possible to automate the measurement process step by step. The extrusion plastometer can be used either as a stand-alone instrument, or it can be run with a computer software for statistical analysis and data management. Depending on options, GOETTFERT Melt Flow Index machines offer additional benefits, besides from just running according to ISO and ASTM. 

mi2.1
The melt flow indexer mi 2.1 shows fit for quality control (QC) where only one weight is used. In addition, it is useful when only a few measurements are made. 

mi2.2
The Melt Flow Indexer mi2.2 is equipped with an automatic weight lifting system. This makes it much easier for the operator to handle weights of 5kg and more. As a time saving option, it also allows the automated start of the measurement right after the melt time is over. Weights can also be lifted at the end of the test, to allow an easy cleaning process.

mi2.3
The Melt Flow Indexer mi2.3 has a full weight handling system, whose cartridge holds up to 8 weights. There is no need anymore to lift or move weights manually.

mi40
 A higher accuracy as well as a higher level of automazation are key advantages of the mi40.

The new mi40 can be operated via a flexible positionable touch panel which can be used directly at mi40 or can be moved flexibly and is therefore equally suited for a right and lefthanded person.
The mi40 can optionally be equipped with a semi-automated cleaning unit, with no use of compressed air, ensuring an efficient and reliable test barrel cleaning by means of up/down movements and rotating cleaning piston.
Operator comfort is increased additionally by the wellknown pre-compression function with test weights for more precise test results and by the ejection function at the end of the measurement. 
As already known from the previous MI series, the test chamber is freely accessible to offer a large operating range for optimal material feeding and cleaning.

mi40 - automation
Our well established fully automated MI-Robo gets support by an ongoing development of fully automated melt flow index tests. We newly offer the possibility to operate our mi40 via an industrial robot, starting from automatic feeding of the test materials into the barrel, performing of the measurement and cleaning of the capillary fully automated. This solution enables a quality control with multiple Melt Flow Indexers (mi40) at the same time, with different materials and different testig conditions.

mi40 - viscosity
So far, our mi40 offers the possibility to carry out melt index tests with several weights (multi load measurements). An additional Add-on is the development of melt index multi weight measurements with the option of viscosity tests in an extended shear rate range.

The mi40 is also equipped with an OPC/UA Interface, which enables a bi-directional communication between various devices (machine-to-machine).

MI-Robo 89.16
The world wide exclusive fully automated melt-index-instrument with automatic filling, measurement and cleaning.

By its high automation the Automatic  Melt Indexer contributes to an even increased accuracy.
The reason for this high accuracy is the  “operator factor” usually being an important issue, but here it is completely omitted during the fully automated melt flow tests of the MI-Robo contrary to manual and semi-manual operated MI devices.
The melt flow tests are according to the standards ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238.

The already well-established pre-compression function with test weights for more precise test procedure and test results and the ejection function for ejecting the test material at the end of the test contribute to a high user convenience.

The MI-Robo 89.16 is  equipped with an integrated die cleaning function.
The die cleaning is automatically performed by the system and the die is directly available for
subsequent tests.

New features of the MI-Robo is the optimized replacement of the cleaning roll and the use of
electric motors instead of pneumatic motors.  As a result, both, noise level and air consumption were reduced significantly
To complete the mentioned features we like to emphasize the accelerated weight selection and the optimized piston cleaning to provide fast availability of the weights and the test piston for subsequent test.
It is also possible to connect the MI-Robo 89.16 to an Online-Sampler for feeding test material directly from the production line.

miCONNECT

The new Software Platform for Melt Flow Indexers.

With miCONNECT we start into the technological future of melt index measurements.
A server-based platform for comfortable service and evaluation of melt index test devices using a web browser-based user interface.
With OPC-UA, we rely on a common and secure industry standard for communication between device and software in order to keep smooth operation flexible and comfortable.
Measurement data can be stored and managed via Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft Access and can therefore be scaled to meet any requirement.

Most important functions:

·         Location-independent operation
·         Numerical and graphical display of the measured values with statistical evaluation

D-MELT

The D-Melt enables the determination of melt index and elongation viscosity in one measurement.
This combination is particularly interesting as a quick test in quality control (QC) for processing process of polymers.

The melt index measurement is an internationally standardized procedure, which is used to determine the flowability of polymer melts. The sample is plasticized in a heated test barrel and afterwards extruded through a capillary with a test piston and a defined weight on top. Meanwhile the MVR-value (melt volume-flow rate) is calculated form the feed rate of the test piston. With the melt density it can be converted to the MFR-value (melt mass-flow rate) in g/10min.
The D-MELT makes it possible to also determine the MElt Elongation value (ME-value), a measure of the melt elasticity. Both measurements, ME and MVR, are done with just one filling of the test barrel. The ME-measurement is completed before the start of the standard-confirming MVR-measurement.
The ME-value is the force in the extruded strand at a certain draw-down ratio. This new combined method realizes the opportunity to determine a significant characteristic value of the extrusion behavior of your product in a quick, easy and cost-effective way. The D-MELT system and the ME-value are therefore ideal for continuous process monitoring or the inspection of incoming goods.

Capillary Rheometer with Add-Ons

The new high-pressure capillary rheometer series with an extensive range of Add-Ons

The current family of the GOETTFERT capillary Rheometer is available with different measurement forces (20,25, 50, 75, 120kN). With the high-end model RG 120 it is possible to reach much higher sheare rates. Besides the determination of viscosity, the Rheograph family is able to access the GOETTFERT plattform for extended material characterization with features as follows:

CONTIFEED -

Our fully automated Melt Feeding Unit

The CONTIFEED offers new possibilities for determination of process-related rheological
test data. The system is combined of a Capillary rheometer and a Mini-Extruder.
The Extruder feeds the test barrel of the Rheograph with melt, which ensures an air bubble free filling of the test barrel.
This continuous method of melt feeding contributes to a significant timesaving during the tests.
The reduced material residence time under influence of elevated temperatures is just one of the advantages due to shortened heating time by optimized and effective heating system.

As a result of this short heating time the CONTIFEED is specially suitable for elastomers and thermally less stable material.
By pre-plastification also powder materials, e.g. PVC dry blends can be measured.

PVT -

PVT Measurement isothermal/isobaric air-cooled up to 500 °C
(ISO17744)

The test device PVT500 is specifically designed for measurements of PVT isothermal and PVT isobaric.

With this device thermodynamic properties, the specific volume of the polymer as a function of temperature and pressure, can be determined.
These data are particularly important for the simulation of the injection moulding process. But they also can be used to describe any process of shrinkage during cooling as for example in extrusion.

The measurement can be performed in two possibilities:
Isothermal – at constant temperature and changing pressure or
Isobaric – at constant pressure with different cooling rates.

The device is characterized by its compact test chamber and by its new optimized cooling system.
The cooling medium is air, therefore no cooling water connection is required.

As an option also the thermal conductivity of the material can be measured acc. ASTM D5930 / ISO 22007-1

SLR - Spin Line Rheometer

Extensional Rheometer for high Haul-off Speeds

Melt spinning is an important production process for chemical fibers made of synthetic or biologically based polymers.
The new Spin Line Rheometer introduced by GÖTTFERT is a measurement system to characterize the spinnability of polymers in lab scale. The system can be installed under an extruder or a capillary rheometer and is able to measure the strand force and therefore the extensional viscosity at spinning speeds of up to 7000 m/min.
The strand is guided around the diversion-wheel that is placed horizontally below the extruder die.
The wheel is installed on a highly sensitive force sensor with a resolution of 0,05mN that measures the draw-down force in the strand. The strand is accelerated by the take-off wheel installed on a high-speed electric motor. A strand guide makes multiple wrappings possible.
A Venturi-Die is used to separate the strand from the take-off wheel. Optionally an optical measurement system can be installed to measure the strand profile at various positions between the die and the diversion-wheel. A new, extended version of the Rheotens-Software is used to control the measurement system and to analyze the data.

The Software can be connected to higher-level bus systems. With an optional self running Online Sampler System for material feeding a non-stop operation is guaranteed.

Succesful expansion to ISO / IEC 17025 Testing Lab

Material testing with conformity to relevant measuring standards like DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025 is becoming increasingly important. In order to guarantee the best possible service regarding the calibration of our testing instruments, we have expanded our lab‘s accreditation compliant to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025. Specifically for the point „Parameter determination of mechanic-technological testing instruments and processes.“

At the GÖTTFERT testing lab, our application technology experts conduct material tests in conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 with instruments like Capillary Rheometer, Melt Flow Indexer, Laboratory Extruders, Flat and Blown Film Systems as well as instruments like the Rubber Process Analyzers or the Moving Die Rheometers.

In our expanded lab, a team of qualified experts conducts rheological tests in conformity to ISO / IEC 17025.

Besides standard ISO and ASTM norms, we use additional internal norms in order to maintain our high level of quality for our products. These norms will especially be used, if certain testing processes are not yet covered by official norms.
