A facility similar to the aforementioned IR Innovation Lab has been developed for USHIO’s excimer technology, which allows clients to experiment on their production materials before committing to a purchase order. In the past, USHIO has provided successfully excimer solutions to research pioneers such as the Fraunhofer ILT PhotonFlex project and original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) like SteriLux SA. The beauty of excimer is its adaptability, able to be installed as an independent large scale solution or as a compact module which integrates directly into existing production lines.

USHIO excimer technology harnesses safer UV wavelengths
In general, ultraviolet light has the deserved reputation of being dangerous for humans; however this only takes place at wavelengths of 354nm and above. At 354nm, UV light gains enough intensity that it is able to penetrate the epidermal layer of skin and cause molecular changes in the layers beneath. Excimer irradiation from USHIO occupies customisable wavelengths between 170nm and 310nm, which are chosen for the specific qualities achieved at each single wavelength.

At this range of intensity, the UV radiation is unable to penetrate the top layer of skin and simply deactivates any bacteria that may be present on the surface. Our surface activation technology has been developed to concentrate 172nm light on your chosen substrates. On the other hand, our PureRelease water purification component has proven 242nm light to be most effective in the instant disinfection of water at the point of dispensation (POD). USHIO is also working on an irradiation device that will operate at 222nm, and in the future, will be utilised in pioneering medical procedures to promote faster wound healing.

IR Innovation Lab: USHIO pushes ‘Total Solutions’ portfolio

Infrared Innovation Laboratory offered by USHIO in the total solutions portfolio
As part of the portfolio of solutions that are currently offered by USHIO, customers are able to utilise an in-house, bespoke Infra-red (IR) Application Lab to test IR applications, hone application designs, achieve insight and technical knowledge, and pave the way for ground-breaking innovation within IR applications.

The Infrared Innovation Laboratory, based at USHIO Germany in Steinhöring, is a labour of intensive in-house research, conceptualisation and design. The lab enables USHIO to offer its customers a full package, total solution from product to consultation, and unparalleled in-house expertise all under one roof. The project, which is spearheaded by Dr. Matthias Brandstetter, Technical Development Manager IR at Ushio Germany, is an opening for customers to improve their existing Infrared designs, optimise existing Infrared processes and thoroughly analyse Infrared performance under laboratory testing conditions. As part of USHIO’s laboratory package, the customer can benefit from the expert guidance and consultation of USHIO’s dedicated technical team who have an unrivalled knowledge of IR heating radiation and IR process technology.

The IR Innovation Lab is just one example which illustrates this perfectly. We work together with customers to identify a weak spot or just a general area for improvement and then further collaborate to create something that is remarkable, together. The lab is a platform for collaboration and joint investigation and analysis of IR processes providing various setups that emulate customer production environments. This simulation environment is the catalyst to perform experiments which can rarely be realised at the customers own environment. We recently worked together with a customer and used the IR Innovation Lab as a tool to investigate their current IR processes and the results were truly fantastic; through analysis driven optimisation, more than double the previous performance was eventually achieved.” Says Dr. Brandstetter.
USHIO IR Innovation Lab equipped with a conveyor belt system and 2D scanning device
The lab houses an adjustable conveyor belt system used to transport customer materials and products, capable of mounting various types of USHIO IR equipment.  Furthermore, a 2D scanning device allowing the measurement of radiation patterns of IR lamps and IR modules in 2 dimensions enables the investigation, analysis and optimisation of IR equipment designs. For acquisition, visualisation and analysis of measurement data, the IR application lab is equipped with an array of sensors and detection tools.

“We have found that 1-2 days is adequate time for testing in the laboratory, resulting in significant process improvements for the customer whilst simultaneously reducing development efforts on the customer’s part.” Explains Dr. Brandstetter

The IR Innovation Laboratory is just one of the facilities that are available at the German site in Steinhöring for use along with other testing facilities for UV, UV-LED. A plan to offer a further Excimer/VUV testing laboratory is in the planning for the end of 2018, due to a growing demand for this specialised service offered by USHIO.

IRtenser: The Infrared “Swiss Army Knife”

USHIO provides testing facilities for infrared applications at various locations around the globe, with USHIO Innovation Laboratories taking root in Germany and Japan. During these developmental phases, we often ask our clients to bring along their application materials to enable us to discover the perfect IR solution to their needs. However, some applications take place on a very large industrial scale, which makes replication of realistic conditions difficult in a laboratory scenario. For this reason, USHIO have decided to bring the lab to you, with a new series of easy to use IR modules. The IRtenser series has been introduced by USHIO to facilitate the research and development required to design customer infrared applications. The modular infrared ‘building block’ system is geared towards ease of use, and can be applied to numerous different types of infrared treatments, alongside many of our long established solutions:

Described by USHIO IR expert, Dr. Matthias Brandstetter, as the “Swiss Army knife of the infrared world”, the four existing IRtenser modules are fully customisable and adapt for easy application testing by our clients. We are also embarking on a planning and development phase for further expansions to the series, as significant interest from industry leaders has proven the market is there. Dr. Brandstetter explained that the logistical aspect of some application testing requires a solution that at the nerve centre of the clients’ needs: “General consensus is that while our own Innovation Lab brings the ingenuity of USHIO and our clients together, some applications take place on such a large scale that it makes sense for the lab to go to the client, rather than the other way around.” These efficiently designed, high powered IR-A devices aid the exploration of different lamp types, so you can find the best IR solution for you.

IRtenser enabling in-house infrared application testing
While each of the IRtenser-series can be applied to a multitude of applications, USHIO will always be on hand to guide you, with almost half a century of experience creating IR heating solutions. We have previously advised and encouraged our modules to be used in the following ways:

IRtenser U300: Ideal for applications where space constraints are critical and a modular IR concept is required in order to create extended heating fields. This is particularly exemplified by applications such as 3D coating, fibre coating, and plastic forming. With a 3kW power channelling through 3 bent IR lamps, a homogeneous heating field is generated to a power density of 150kW/m2.
IRtenser LC220+: This model brings an ultra-compact design to gleam 2.7kW of power through a quartz window. The ultra-flat, L-shaped module allows for the simultaneous heating of two surfaces, which gives it an advantage in applications such as automatic fibre placement and various electronics industry processes.
IRtenser R280 & R280+: These high power intensity 6kW reference modules can be equipped with three different lamp types during process-of-elimination testing. Covering a multispectral IR range, this series is compatible with our EasyFit quick connection set. The R280+ model has an additionally integrated quartz window. These are best suited for exploratory applications that will eventually lead to a permanent solution or process.
