All components are designed and manufactured by ASS Maschinenbau GmbH. Every tool is made and designed according to the European Machinery Building Regulations. We developed a state-of-the art kit of components that fit together like an erector set. It gives you sheer unlimited possibilities to build your own custom robotic tooling with ease. The kit includes advanced components that enable you to build Robotic Tooling even for complex material handling applications. The ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) consists of more than 1,900 gripper components, such as grippers, vacuum cups, profiles and special gripper components. According to your specifications we design Robotic Tooling from our array of grippers, vacuum cups and aluminum profiles. We can also integrate them into your existing automation. We offer our components in different sizes to accommodate an ideal fit for your part size. All components fit together like an erector set. Most parts are in stock and ready to ship the same day.
Custom Design and Special Solutions
We combine custom-made components with our standard components. Our standard gripper components can be combined with: Individual components made of polyamide (for example contours), lightweight components made of carbon such as carbon tube systems or coated gripping elements integrated (for example with EP-coating, PTFE or Flock). Many special solutions for gripper parts have been included as a standard gripper parts in our catalogue in the course of time and expand the product range for our customers.
Most of our components are anodized, which provides a hardened and scratch-resistant surface. Our custom aluminum extrusion features a unique tongue and groove design that provides a form- fit connection that is stable even after years of service. With the dawn of new processes, we continuously develop new and improved components.

Handling of Ultra-Lightweight FRP Components
Efficient production of lightweight components for series production
The use of lightweight components such as fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), and especially carbon fiber reinforced plastic parts (CFRP) are growing in importance in the automotive industry: Lightweight components in vehicles reduce energy demand through massive savings in weight and increase safety through better stiffness and damping of FRP products. In addition, the materials are resistant to corrosion. Fiber-reinforced plastics in addition to carbon fiber reinforced plastic parts (CFRP) include glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP).
Challenges to handling limp organo-sheets
A particular challenge is the reliable handling of limp organo-sheets. While the cold, untreated organo-sheets and the fully formed and cooled down parts can be treated conventionally, heated organo-sheets have to be handled more specifically. While heating the material it must be ensured that the composite sheet does not sag, that it stays in its defined position and that it is accurately deformed. ASS Maschinenbau has numerous tailored solutions in the field for handling ultra-lightweight components made of thermoplastic carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials in the field. The original ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) offers, for example, a variety of different needle grippers for handling limp and flexible materials. To ensure best grip also vacuum cups are included in the automation system solutions. ASS offers specially developed vacuum cups that can withstand the high temperatures and leave no or only minor marks on the material. The process will be adjusted individually for accurate positioning as needed. For this purpose, ASS offers for example docking fingers, centering fingers, grippers, and gripper fingers, stacking guides, and/or various sensors.
The challenge with "Bin-Picking", lies in the reliable reproducibility of the removal of unordered, in particular small-sized bulk material from transport containers. As a specialist for system integration, ASS shows engineering based on real customer parts.
The video below shows the implementation of the customer component, an aluminum tube for engine cooling. The boxes simulate the reservoir of the component to be separated. After removal from the bulk material box, the camera system scans the position of the remaining components and creates a 3D image for the next removal. At the same time, the robot carries out a defined work step that simulates further processing of the component.

Individual Lightweight Designs and Absolute Flexibility
In production often smallest components with very small geometries are needed. Automation technology often reaches its limits. By ASS PA-Forming (selective laser sintering process) we are successful where conventional gripper systems are reaching their limits. PA-Forming means that the plastic polyamide powder is melted by a laser. The selectively melted plastic mass is built up in layers according to the specifications of the digital construction data. The selective laser sintering process creates previously unimagined freedoms for the development of new components. Compact size, low weight, and integrated functions are advantages. Very small nest pitches and the handling of thin-walled, unstable parts are possible. In addition to the weight advantage, moving elements can be integrated directly into the components. 3D contours can have integrated air ducts or gripping functions and movable elements such as bellow structures. Polyamide gripper parts can be combined individually with the components of our our ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT). With ASS PA-Forming we open up new avenues in automation technology.
Little-marking gripping of sensitive plastic parts
The requirements of the plastics industry constantly increases as part of quality assurance. A requirement is the little-marking gripping of smooth and glossy plastics. For a gentle and little-marking use of gripping components ASS provides a wear-resistant elastomeric polyurethane (EP) coating for partial or flat areas on gripper and special components of the ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT).
High Quality: high strength - little-marking - non-slipping
The elastomer polyurethane coating is highly abrasion-resistant, wear-resistant and adapts to the contours of components. With the EP coating virtually all parts of the ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) and special components can be coated. Even laser-sintered polyamide elements are suitable for a EP coating. An important advantage of the elastic coating is the better traction and secure gripping by higher friction. For example, when gripping with a gripper or when depositing into a coated contour. By seamlessly, rubbery coating the contacting surfaces are protected. In addition, the EP coating acts shock absorbing, is electrically insulating and silicone-free. The EP coating can be used in a wide temperature range of -50°C to +90°C. In short-term-use also temperature peaks up to 130°C are possible.
The EP coating is particularly suitable for gripper jaws and contour pieces: In the practical application a precise and secure gripping parts is necessary. Depending on the material properties there can remain optical residues. To minimize this effect, the gripper jaws can be covered with EP coating. The coated gripper jaws grab the component accurately, safely and almost non-markingt. EP coating is LABS free, i.e. the material is free of paint-wetting impairment substances. Individual components of polyamide, such as laser-sintered contour pieces can also be coated easily. EP coating provides here a precise contour protection for the contour touching plastic parts. As usual ASS tested the material extensively before the practical application in the laboratory. After more than five million successfully completed gripping cycles the practice started. Since early 2014 EP coated ASS components are used reliably in different automation systems in the plastic injection moulding industry.

Quality made in Germany
As a result, the smallest injection molded parts are being increasingly automated. The ASS Micro System receives about 70 new micro components for handling solutions of smallest components. The Micro System allows to create grippers for smallest of spaces in small injection molding machines or linear handlings: both size and weight can be minimized with the ASS Micro System.
The smallest version of the new semi-automatic quick change system SWH can also be found in the Micro System. Three sizes of the quick coupler are included in the new catalogue: 50, 90 and 150 millimeters. They have a secure connection between the robot and gripper sides and six, eight or ten air ducts. With the additional accessories the locked position can be queried.
Also new is the manual quick change system SWM KH. It has a user-friendly lever mechanism that fixes the robot base plate quickly and easily with positive locking.
For various handling tasks, new versions of the GRZ grippers and gripper jaws of various sizes, more sizes of the PGR-P parallel gripper with extensive accessories are available in the ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT). Among other things, different grippers and gripper jaws with the highly wear-resistant EP coating and NPN variants for international handling tasks.
New gripper arms increase the flexibility of the modular system: Various designs of spring-loaded, angled arms or combinations of different clamping diameters allow numerous other applications.
The new needle gripper NGR 20-6-25 D and gripping pliers GRZ 10-12 PTFE are tailored to the lightweight construction sector with its layers or sticky materials. Both gripper parts are equipped with PTFE-coated contact surfaces to handle sticky materials safely.
The novelties are rounded off with further needle grippers, various clamping pieces, adapters and accessories. The new gripper parts fit seamlessly into the ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) and can be combined with the existing gripper components.
The new gripper components from ASS Maschinenbau will be presented at the K show 2019 in Düsseldorf at booth 10J22 in hall 10.
More and more case parts are being automated due to increasing quality demands. A small installation space or the maximum manageable weight pose special challenges here. The new Micro System mady by ASS Maschinenbau closes the gap .
With a clamping diameter of 6 mm, the Micro System is significantly smaller and lighter than the smallest system to date with a 10-millimeter clamping diameter. The Micro System is used wherever small injection molding machines or even small linear handling machines and other miniature machines are in use and there is little space in the tool. With the new system, it is now possible to handle even the smallest components that used to be case parts simply and cleanly in the tightest of spaces.
Numerous gripper parts for the niche
The ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) already has numerous Micro System gripper parts aligned for small components and tight spaces. Further micro components will be introduced to K and included in the catalog so that more than 60 gripper parts will enable the construction of micro grippers.
Among the available gripper parts, in addition to several grippers GRZ 06-06 and a micro quick-change system, there are various angle clamps and arms, connecting elements, gripping arms in various designs with air ducts or sprung, as well as an adapted selection of micro-suction cups.
Due to the small design of the gripper parts, the Micro System is in the truest sense of the word a niche product for automation solutions with a small installation space. Built on the familiar L-profile, the weight and space benefits are optimized with the Micro System. The gripper made of Micro System components shown in the picture weighs only 265 grams and thus about 500 grams less than a comparable gripper with 10 mm clamping system.
