The Xplore MC 15 HT is our next generation 15 ml compounder that will further simplify and accelerate your R&D: it is stronger in shear, can handle higher viscosities, gives finer dispersion, better mixing and higher operational stability than ever before.
It is twice as fast (rpm), twice as strong and much more stable (screw torque), with less than half the foot print: therefore it gives you more with less.
Although it seems an evolution in look and working with it, it is a revolution in specs:

Cast Film Line 35 mm

The CFL 35 is based on Xplore’s proprietary technology. In combination with our micro compounder (see image below), it is now possible to obtain reproducible cast film with just 5 - 10 g of material in 5 - 10 minutes. In this way your material development time is drastically reduced and considerably less R&D budget is needed.

A representative test film is now obtained in just a few minutes with only a fraction of material used compared to conventional film development on laboratory equipment. The CFL 35 is especially useful when only a small amount of material is available, or when expensive additives are used, like nano-tubes, active pharmaceutical ingredients, etc..
Key features:
Our continuous feed kit, consisting of a mountable barrel hopper and continuous feed screws, makes it possible to process larger samples into extremely long film via continuous extrusion.
The micro film line is able to produce cast film and sheet with 5 – 10 g samples. The integrated air knife can process film up to a width of ca. 35 mm.
The film drawing speed is between 100 and 5000 mm/min and the drawing drum can be adjusted with increments of 1 mm/min.* The second, winding drum is torque controlled (its diameter will grow during the test run), and the winding torque can be adjusted with increments of 1 Nmm.
In combination with our micro compounder, which is equipped with throughput control, you can produce a uniform film thickness without the use of a gear pump.
Latest results show that films as thin as 5 µm can be obtained without holes.*

Cast Film 65 mm

Xplore developed a high tech 65 mm wide film line with dedicated temperature control to meet customer needs for more R&D possibilities. The CFL 65 guarantees an even better controlled process and larger test samples for the testing of e.g. optical, mechanical and/or barrier properties.
In less than 10 min you can produce a wide cast film out of our 65 mm heated film die, with a thickness from 5 µm up to strip thickness with a minimum batch size of ca. 15 ml. Alternatively, you can make many meters of film or strip in continuous mode with larger sample quantities. With the CFL 65 you can further test and better optimize new film formulations at negligible waste and minimal costs by producing more than 20 different films per day.

The continuous feeding kit, consisting of a mountable, water-cooled top hopper and two continuous feeding screws and/or forced feeding screws, enables easy auto feeding in continuous extrusion mode.
As an option the first take up roll can be air cooled (see picture above)
The film drawing speed can be adjusted between 100 and 5000 mm/min with increments of 1 mm/min on the first drum winder.*
Film necking is minimized with an air knife just after the die.

Xplore developed a high end cast film pro film line, with three calenders, for extensife R&D possibilities.
The CFPL guarantees the best controlled process for the testing and screening (slippery) film formulations of e.g. optical, mechanical and/or barrier properties.
In less than 10 min you can produce a wide cast film out of our a heated film die, with a thickness from 5 µm up to strip thickness with a batch out of one of our compounders. Alternatively, you can make many meters of film or strip in continuous mode with larger sample quantities. With the CFPL you can further test and better optimize slippery film formulations at negligible waste and minimal costs by producing more than 20 different films per day.
Key Features:
The film cast speed can be adjusted on the first calender winder roll between 100 and 5000 mm/min with increments of 1 mm/min (via micro stepping*).
Film necking is minimized with an air knife just and two air pins after the die.
The second, transport calender roll is also speed controlled*) via a master slave arrangement with the first calender and has a pinch roll on top of it to adjust the mechanical pressure on the film sample to minimize slip on the film sample.
The third, collecting, calender winder roll is torque controlled (its diameter will grow during the test run), to ensure even film uptake, which can be adjusted with increments of 1 Nmm.
The continuous feeding kit, consisting of a mountable, water-cooled top hopper and two continuous feeding screws and/or forced feeding screws, enables easy auto feeding in continuous extrusion mode from one of our micro compounders (MC 15 HT or MC 5).

Fiber Line

The Xplore micro fiber line (FL) can produce mono or multi filaments filaments from just a few grams of material in just 10 - 15 min, thus stretching the number of screenings and shrinking your development time. Our micro fiber spin line is fully compatible with our high precision micro compounders and extruders. Cutting edge laboratories use the FL to make maximum use of (costly) synthesized materials and (costly) additives and to save development time.
Recently we developed a multi filament die (MFD) can be mounted onto our Xplore MC 15 compounder to have a vertical spinning die outlet, which enhances the spinning process. The MFD consist of twelve die openings to enable for multiple filament spinning applications.
Xplore's micro fiber line enables you to obtain fibers from just 5 - 10 g of material in 10 - 15 minutes in a reliable and reproducible way. So less material is needed for testing, material development time is drastically reduced and considerably less R&D budget is needed.
Representative test fibers can now be obtained in a few minutes with only a fraction of material used compared to conventional fiber development on laboratory equipment. The micro fiber line is especially useful when only small amounts of material are available or when expensive additives are used.
Extremely long fiber samples can be obtained with our continuous feed kit. There is no need for an additional spinning pump, as our micro-compounder is featured with throughput control to secure uniform fiber diameter. To prevent fiber breakage at the beginning of a stretching process a “slow start up sequence” can be programmed.
The instrument consists of two units: a high speed winding unit (winding speed up to 200 m/min) and a low speed stretching unit (. Such design keeps the equipment to fit on a table in your R&D laboratory.
The stretching/conditioning unit has a controlled supply and take up roll and a heating element to accurately control fiber drawing speed, draw ratio and drawing temperature. The unit can be configured to perform hot or cold drawing/stretching of fibers using independently speed controlled godets. This ensures a reproducible process and product.
The speed of the winder godet can be controlled accurately from 0.5 to 90 m/min.
The lateral moving speeds of the traverse guides on both units are (in)dependently controlled to generate a variety of filament overlap pitch patterns. The pitch between adjacent mono filaments can be controlled within 0.1 mm to 4.0 mm. The units use 75 mm aluminum spools but can also accommodate carton bobbins. The fiber heating options of the stretching/conditioning unit consist either of a hot shoe (which heats the fiber by radiation), or, optionally, of a heated metal cylinder which heats the fiber by conduction.
These features accurately heat the fibers and enable accurate and reproducible stretching conditions of the mono filament. Once a steady stretching process is established the traverse guide laterally shifts to a defined area of the bobbin to wind the fibers in a pre-programmed pitch pattern.
Optionally a multi filament die (MFD) (see below) can be mounted onto our Xplore MC 15 compounder to have a vertical spinning die outlet, which enhances the spinning process. The MFD consist of twelve die openings to enable for multiple filament spinning applications. The MFD can be completed with a two stage quench box and avivage unit and melt strength measurement to produce top quality multi filaments.

Lignin Fiber Line

With the Xplore lignin fiber line (LFL) you can quickly produce and condition lignin mono filaments with 5 - 10 g of material. The Xplore LFL is fully compatible with our micro compounders. Cutting edge laboratories use the LFL to wind and condition (cross-link) lignin fibers under extremely precise and reproducible conditions. So you can quickly screen and optimize the process of spinning and conditioning, which are precursors for the carbonization process. This saves costs and development time.
With this new winder and conditioning unit you can spin lignin monofilaments and subsequently cross-link them under well-defined heat, stress or strain conditions, so that they can be carbonized subsequently. These two screening instruments drastically relieve your R&D efforts and reduce your development time, so that less R&D budget is needed.
Lignin, a main component of wood, is one of the most abundant renewable biopolymers on earth. It is a byproduct in the paper industry with a main use as biofuel because of its high energy content. Yet, industry is constantly scouting for new, higher end, value-added applications.
One such potential new application is high tenacity, high stiffness carbon fibers. The main driver is the lower raw material costs of lignin fibers compared with PAN fibers. To develop a reliable process, R&D with specialized instruments is needed, as lignin fibers are extremely difficult to process and handle because of their very high brittleness.
Xplore recently developed this dedicated R&D lignin fiber line meeting all demanding R&D requirements. Scientists can now more easily collect lignin fibers with our special, large diameter winder and subsequently condition these fibers in an extremely accurate and reproducible way. The two instruments enable you to screen and optimize this delicate spinning and conditioning process with different lignin grades. It results in cross-linked lignin fibers with better mechanical properties. These fibers can be converted into carbon fibers in a final carbonization process step.
With our new winder, lignin monofilaments can be produced and collected in a reliable and reproducible way. 
Our new conditioning unit contains many sophisticated features to guarantee reproducible clamping of the extremely fragile lignin fibers, precise temperature control of the airflow and a constant very low stress or strain of the lignin fiber to be cross-linked under the chosen cure conditions. The strain can be adjusted on a nanometer level and the stress on a mN level. As required, the stress range can be chosen 1 – 250 mN or 1 – 1000 mN. The gripper displacement part of the conditioning unit can move back and forth with minimum increments of 1 nm to ensure accurate and constant fiber tension or strain during the process of cross-linking under thermal load. The conditioning unit enables you to cross-link the lignin fiber under ultra-accurate, pre-defined tension or strain and thermal conditions to give it sufficient mechanical properties for the subsequent carbonizing step. The compact design allows the equipment to fit on a table in your R&D laboratory.
After this conditioning, the cured lignin monofilaments are strong enough to be converted into carbon fibers via a standard carbonization process (not in the Xplore conditioning unit).
Hence this new lignin fiber line can provide the precise and delicate pretreatments required to produce a cross-linked lignin fibers with sufficient mechanical properties to allow handling for a subsequent carbonization process step.
The Xplore lignin fiber line enables you to screen and optimise the delicate spinning and conditioning processes in a fast, accurate, reproducible and user friendly manner.

Double Winding Line

The Xplore double winder line (DWL) is specially designed to be used to wind, elongate and de-wind polymer fibers. It enables you to pass a fiber through a temperature controlled oven for a heat treatment or a bath of liquid with additives to impregnate the fiber(s), as a result altering the properties of the mono or multifilament fiber. 

The DWL can also be utilized as a winding and de-winding instrument for testing optimum wind and de-wind conditions for (brittle) fibers e.g lignin to enhance and or speed up fiber R&D (e.g lignin to C-fiber R&D). The DWL is designed to enable an experienced process engineer to wind and de-wind a very fragile monofilament or multifilament in between a carbonisation oven to treat e.g a lignin mono-filament into a C-fiber (this particular oven is not included). Or to guide the multi or mono filament fiber through a liquid or solvent bath. The winding, de-winding speed and elongation ratio of the DWL are adjustable, allowing it to be precisely tailored to each individual fiber heating or coating application.

In collaboration with Prof. dr. em. Han Meijer, Xplore Instruments BV recently developed a tape line (TL) add-on, for our MC 15 HT compounder, which enables you to produce ultra-oriented foils with exceptional properties from just a small amount of material. This tape die is a unique asset for the development of new ultra-oriented foil or tape formulations. It will create new product opportunities by delivering quick reliable test results of foils and tapes with excelent mechanical properties. When connected to our Xplore MC 15 compounder it is a full-fledged ultra-oriented tape or foil casting solution for your R&D challenges.  Are you in for a game changer regarding mechanical properties of tapes or foils?
Then our TL add-on for our MC 15 HT offers you the solution: reliable and reproducible, very fast results with less material and waste and less equipment and infrastructural costs. The core of this laboratory oriented tape/foil die is formed with our MC 15 HT compounder and an insulated temperature controlled, easy to clean, tool steel housing tape/foil die. The die has an ability to adjust its slit height between 0,05 and 0,4 mm, which enables you to be flexible in your processing workflows.
A sophisticated coat hanger design inside the tape/foil die in combination with the channel plate (with 125 holes of 0,5 mm or optional 512 holes of 0,12 mm) together with the inner fiber fusion section creates an optimal flow of the visco-elastic material processed. Which results in an ultra-oriented tape/foil with excellent unique mechanical properties.
The Xplore MC 15 HT compounder will, in addition, be equipped with a pre-dosing unit, stainless steel feeding hopper and elongated forced feeding screws. This guarantees an equilibrium in the main barrel, in combination with the existing force measurement (Fv) this enables a constant throughput of molten material, hence near perfect tape or foil dimensions. The tape die temperature, cast and draw speed can be monitored on the provided control box which is part of the total set up.
The TL can produce ultra oriented tapes and foils from a minimum of 300 grams of material. The tape die itself can be easily fitted on our latest MC 15 HT micro compounders but is of course also backwards compatible with earlier models of (Legacy) MC 15 compounders, designed by Xplore.
In less than 10 min you can produce an ultra oriented thin foil out of our a heated tape die, with a thickness from only a few µm. Hence, you can make many meters of foils in continuous mode with larger sample quantities. With the TL you can further test and better optimize material formulations for foils at negligible waste and minimal costs by producing more than 20 different films per day.

Conveyor Belt Pro

The Xplore conveyor belt pro (CB Pro) unit is specially designed to be used to guide polymer strands directly from a smaller extruder or compounder die. The conveyor belt pro does fit perfectly to our MC 5 and MC 15 HT. The belt speed of the conveyor belt pro is adjustable, allowing it to be precisely tailored to each individual application.

Instead of being conventionally extruded into a water bath, the polymer strand is extruded directly onto a non-sticking PTFE conveyor belt, which carefully, in a controlled manner, draws the fragile nascent strands. This controlled drawing of the strands, while they are still in a non-solid state, prevents breaks or cracks in the strands. This enables the polymer strand to cool down in a predetermined shape ready for a subsequent analysing step or to be directly fed into a small pelletizer.

Xplore will launch a new product line for rubber R&D at the K-show

Process small amounts of rubber into a homogeneous test sample in less than 5 minutes.
With 40 Nm of screw torque processing rubbers compounds becomes easy, even with fully intermeshing screws. Much more comprehensive mixing than the commonly used tangential screw design type mixers.
Every part of the sample has equal properties. Contrast that with a tangential screw design, where generating a consistent sample is still a challenge. Our lab compoundes provides a neater alternative rubber mixing solution to the difficult to clean and labor-intensive “Banbury” type internal lab mixer including two roll milling, which usually takes around 20 minutes.
Our alternative mixes 15- 40 ml of rubber in less than 5 minutes generating a homogeneous mixture for subsequent analysis.

Xplore MC 15 HT, the "next gen" high torque micro compounder

Xplore Instruments BV developed a new game changing, ultra strong, MC 15 compounder. The new
MC 15 HT has 40 Nm of torque over nearly its complete r.p.m range, with a screw speed range
of 0-500 r.p.m. Hence, making the MC 15 HT suitable for highly viscous or very concentrated
materials. Also the toughest rubbers and elastomers are now processable without any issues. The
main barrel and the processing screws are still the same, like the previous legacy MC 15 compounder,
hence it’s still the best quality micro batch mixer in the world, but now with tremedous power
and a wider speed range.

The new MC 40 lab compounder for polymer and rubber R&D purposes

Xplore Instruments will  introduce an MC 40 lab compounder at the K-show. The new MC 40 has
maximimum 40 Nm of torque with a maximum screw speed of 500 r.p.m. Hence, making the
MC 40 suitable for processing larger batches of high viscous materials or highly concentrated
materials. Also rubbers and elastomers are now processable. The larger batch size will enable
you to process larger amounts of materials in a shorter period of time. The longer screws will
result in a longer residence time in continuous extrusion mode. The continuous feeder option
supports dimensional stability during cast fi lm and fi ber spinning applications.
