BarrierFlex® – Blown Film lines for the production of barrier and high-barrier film with symmetrical and asymmetrical film structures (7, 9 and 11 layers)
Coextrusion lines of this series are intended for customers manufacturing top-notch high-barrier technical film for food, medical, pharmaceutical and several mechanical (e.g. automotive) applications.
The films produced with BarrierFlex® have a double and triple barrier, respectively, with an EVOH central layer combined with PA middle layers, thus offering a high performing barrier against gases and water vapour.
Additionally, Bandera offers extrusion lines capable of ensuring minimized curling effect in case of asymmetric film structures.

Predicting the future is always a lost cause; when we try to in technology we run the risk to looking foolish,
as Niels Bohr used to say, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future”.
Despite this industries are obliged to try to foresee what’s ahead in order to be prepared when innovation is
unavoidable.
This is the mindset at Bandera; to anticipate what the goals of tomorrow are today, therefore the motto

From the material point of view it is inevitable that all polymers will be degradable and compostable,
reducing recycling to a minimum.

request) new natural materials, with PLA one of the most utilised.
Combining natural substances with advanced performance materials is something that is performed daily
inside The House of Extrusion where in the Extrusion Academy laboratory several polymers are
combined with the recently discovered 2DMaterials for better performance in resistance, lightness, rigidity
and conductivity: thermal and electrical, etc.
That’s why Bandera is an associate member of Graphene Flagship, EU’s research programme.
In recycling it is possible today, thanks to the PURe ® process, to integrate in a single line the purification
of PET flakes with the extrusion, for a food grade product. Bandera has embraced Circular Economy not
only as a proposal to customers but also within its facility with the installation of photovoltaics panels,
electric vehicles and EV charging stations; Energy Saving is a duty today of any industrial site.
In Smart Factory (known also as Industry 4.0 or IIoT) Bandera’s IoE ® Internet of Extrusion ®, for
advanced factory production management, together with robotics, are already implemented in every line.
The manufacturing industry business models will largely be reformulated due to IIoT.

Located near Malpensa Airport and the Lombardy Lake District, there is an innovation centre
where it is possible to test the latest technologies in plastics extrusion, in conjunction with
customers, industry, academia, R&D centres, associations, inventors, etc.
Such collaborations, visible at K2019 Hall 17 C06-C07, are a process of mutual creation and
learning that will help to adapt the technology to the needs of our partners while at the same time
incorporating our 70+ years of extrusion know-how.
During this process the IP created could be shared or remain exclusive to one of the parties
depending on the final application and the joint venture agreement, having common innovation
via knowledge transfer as the principle goal.
The House of Extrusion ® has installed the latest lines for industrial production of plastic and
bioplastic products via several technologies: single screw, twin-screw, pelletizing, blown film, flat
die, lamination, coating, foaming.
EA Extrusion Academy ® is a laboratory where with a twin-screw extruder it is possible to
compound new polymers, also associated with new nanotechnology components, like
2DMaterials (Graphene one of them), it is possible to obtain new polymer blends. EA has recently
performed a world first in extruding PEEK with Graphene, in association with IIT Istituto Italiano
Tecnologia and BeDimensional.
The laboratory which also collaborates with academic institutions (such as University of
Cambridge, CGC Cambridge Graphene Centre, Bicocca University of Milan) and material
suppliers, aims to explore the frontier of new polymer solutions with particular focus on natural
and biodegradable polymers like PLA for Circular Economy solutions.
The work developed in the laboratory (that could be installed in the customer/university location if
needed) is to create pellets that feed the industrial scale production lines for market products, via
our Condor Line ®, Flat Die, Blown Film, Purification, Recycle.
Condor Line ® is a highly innovative 60 m long extrusion line with flat die technology capable of
extruding up to 12 layers film while coating and lamination being flexibly adapted.
All the extrusion lines have the latest IoE Internet of Extrusion ® (Bandera’s Smart Factory) tools
that could be integrated with Cognitive analysis of data production.

Circular Economy is the talk of the times.
Bandera, as a world leader in the construction of machinery for plastics extrusion, feels its
responsibility in trying to increase knowledge about using plastic correctly.
The public needs to be better educated about how to use plastics correctly and what to do with it
afterwards. As stated by K2019: “Plastics should not end up on the dump and certainly not in the
environment. Plastics are valuable materials that should be recycled”, since plastics packaging
will be around for a long time.
While the advantages of plastics are easily recognised, from food storage and transportation, to
lighter and more durable objects, and many more advantages and performances, it cannot be
denied that the use of plastics has become a matter of major concern for the future of the planet.
For years Bandera has collaborated with several material producers to adapt its extruders to the
production of plastic products using natural and therefore biodegradable, biocompostable
materials and when this is not possible at least recyclable for future reuse;
The recent patented line PURe ® goes in the direction of purifying the PET bottle flakes and
directly, in the same process, extrude them for the production of new certified food products.
The reduction of the processes and the reuse of used plastic flakes enhances the reduction of
plastic in circulation.
The extrusion of PLA or other vegetable derived polymers is another example of how it is possible
to contain the otherwise increased waste that unfortunately either ends up in landfills or burned,
so as to reduce waste, but unfortunately producing other pollutants whose consequences are
probably not all understood yet.
By its contribution Bandera tries to “walk the walk”. It has installed photovoltaics panels for
electricity production on its roofs and started to use EVs (electric vehicles) in order to reduce the
CO2 produced by transportation, installing EV charging stations for visitors, customers and
employees that want to do their part.
To such purpose Bandera has already installed 2 chargers at 22 kW and very soon will follow a
100 kW DC that allows an electric car to be charged in only a few minutes.
@K2019 Bandera, Hall 17 C06, C07, will present advanced production lines that are capable
today to work with biopolymers.

Bandera presents IoP Internet of Packaging® samples at Hall 17 C06, C07 @K2019
16-23 October at Düsseldorf Messe. The presentation will demonstrate applications for
product digitalisation via unique secure QR codes on product packaging.
The demonstration prototypes have been developed in collaboration with ScanTrust SA.
Today’s consumer goods markets are buyer’s markets – consumers have more power to
make or break businesses than ever. In this environment, not having a strategy for
delivering trust along with products sold is not an option. If a brand doesn’t succeed in
this regard, their competitors will. So the practical solution for delivering trust to
consumers is digitalised smart packaging. By giving each individual product a unique
and secure QR code, it’s possible to give this product an identity and a history about
product provenance, manufacturing conditions and much more. This can be implemented
right now by printing or via other methods that are used in the supply chains today.
Use cases include package lifecycle histories, web-based product histories with
specificity even down to a single product among millions, and new loyalty programs
based on one-to-one consumer interactions. By also integrating blockchain technology,
ScanTrust and Bandera are demonstrating how companies can take this a step further by
making trusted and immutable data from a blockchain directly available to end
consumers.
Macro trends like climate change and sensitivity to sustainability from consumers
demand that every single package must be reused or recycled in order to reduce its
impact on the environment to the very minimum. Such information on the package life
cycle, as well as the instructions for the consumer could easily be stored and retrieved on
the tagged products. This does not only contribute towards fostering a more circular
economy, but it also empowers consumers so that they can become actors in the
process.
