EDI Die Systems for the Production of Cast Film

Nordson offers a diverse portfolio of die systems for cast film applications, allowing processors to select components best suited for their specific needs and budget.

The Contour® die features an innovative and unique design, with a sculpted shape that is key to enhanced product quality, raw material conservation, and maximum up-time.

The Uniflow™ die provides an affordable option for highspeed production of thermally stable resins with few rate changes, such as stretch film. Its versatile flow channel accommodates a wide range of processing parameters and the elongated teardrop manifold cross-section promotes uniform layers in coextrusion.

EDI Die Systems for Extrusion Coating & Laminating Applications

Improve productivity and minimize costs with the innovative features included on an EDI®EPC™ (edge profile control) die for extrusion coating and laminating applications!

The EPC deckle system’s adjustable internal blade enables operators to minimize the product width and reduce the size of the edge beads, resulting in significant material cost savings. To reduce downtime, the deckle system can also be quickly retracted to simplify the clean-out of carbonized polymer build-up in the die. The entire EPC deckle assembly may also be rapidly removed for a ‘split and clean’ or if the die needs to be opened for maintenance.

EDI® Ultraflex Sheet Dies

One of Nordson’s most versatile systems, Ultraflex™ dies may be equipped with a wide range of optional features, allowing sheet processors to customize their production for a variety of process parameters. These options include the inclusion of a restrictor bar, commonly used to tune the flow distribution for thicker gauges, and deckling options that enable processors to reduce waste in trim.

Recently, Nordson released its SmartGap™ lip and land positioner for sheet applications. This innovative feature provides built-in intelligence to extend the sheet thickness range that a single die can produce without changing die lips, reducing costly downtime.

EDI® Coextrusion Feedblocks

Boost your production with Nordson’s coextrusion feedblock technology!

EDI® coextrusion feedblocks are designed to provide improved layer thickness uniformity, resulting in a final film or sheet product with increased durability and strength. For operations that require frequent product changeovers or additional tuning capabilities, Nordson offers a variety of feedblock options customizable to your specific process. From exchangeable flow inserts that provide a high level of control over product dimensions to selector spools that provide the capability to prearrange the layer sequence upstream of the combining point, Nordson will meet the challenge of advancing your coextrusion process.

Replacing Another Auto Die, Nordson’s Autoflex™ VI-RE Die Yields More Uniform Film, Enhancing the Printing and Heat Shrinking Processes Used for Labels in Packaging

SCHKOPAU, GERMANY, July 8, 2019: When a die used by Innovia Shrinkfilms GmbH for making shrink sleeve film yielded product that was often out of tolerance, the company switched to a die from Nordson Corporation that improved tolerances by 30% and reduced startup times.

Innovia is a specialty film manufacturer and a division of CCL Industries Inc., the world’s largest producer of labels. To supply the fast-growing shrink sleeve segment of the label market, Innovia produces transparent film that is subsequently printed on the inside surface, slipped over a container, and made to conform to the container surface by means of heat shrinking. On the cast film line in which the Nordson die has been installed, Innovia processes a polystyrene blend into monoaxially-oriented film.

The new die, replacing one from another supplier, is an EDI® Autoflex™ VI-RE H40 unit. Like the previous die, the Autoflex die is an automatic one, using data from a computerized downstream gauging system to adjust the transverse thickness profile by making changes to the flexible upper lip of the die.

“In comparison with our previous die, the EDI Autoflex die from Nordson produces more uniform film with 30% better tolerances,” said Giuseppe Ronzoni, Innovia plant manager. “The automatic control of the flexible lip is faster and more accurate and startups are faster than before.”

The flexible lip of an Autoflex die is made up of thermally-actuated adjuster blocks that expand or contract to adjust the lip gap in areas of the film that are thicker or thinner than the target dimension. “The upper lip of the Autoflex die is more flexible in that the adjustments to the lip gap take place more rapidly,” said Patrick Meinen, polymer dies product manager for Nordson.

Another critical factor for ensuring product quality is the length of the lip land—the lip surface just before the die exit. “The lip land can be made longer or shorter to optimize product thickness, flatness, and surface finish,” said Mr. Meinen. “Besides having a stiff upper lip, the older die had a lip land that was too short. In our Autoflex die, we optimized the lip land to control the product profile and manage die pressure.”

At startups, the rapid gauge profile adjustment provided by the Autoflex system reduces the time before saleable product is produced. Also helping to shorten startups is the design of the flow channel, or manifold, inside the die.

“The greater uniformity of the film produced with the EDI die reduces the potential for gauge bands on the product roll,” said Mr. Ronzoni. “This leads to less stretching of the final product and better printing results.”

Company details

EDI® Extrusion Dies, Feedblocks, & Fluid Coating Systems

Extrusion Dies Industries was founded in 1971 as a small machine shop of four people in the small midwest U.S. town of Chippewa Falls. The company introduced its first manual Ultraflex™ die the same year, providing customers with a new solution for their sheet processing needs.

Since 1971, Extrusion Dies Industries has created a standard of excellence in extrusion and fluid coating die systems. The company remains committed to the changing needs of customers, developing new products that have resulted in performance improvements and increased production opportunities. These products range from the introduction of the Ultracoat™ die for fluid coating applications to the first FastGap™ lip adjustment system for sheet processors to the highly innovative and game-changing design of the Contour® cast film die. Through engagement with customers, the company has also made numerous advancements in the areas of biaxially oriented film, coextrusion technology, and extrusion coating and laminating.

Nordson Corporation acquired Extrusion Dies Industries and Premier Dies Corporation in 2012 as part of the company’s new line of business dedicated to serving the needs of the plastics industry.
