Tech seminar - Safer connected homes around the world

Increasingly smart home appliances get connected to the smart grid and are left unattended more often to carry out ever-more complex tasks.  Therefore the need for safety and reliability is increasing to avoid the risk of electrical failures and potentially fatal fires. There is a growing need for insulation plastics in electrical interconnects with higher performance in electrical resistance, flame retardance,  heat or chemical resistance (high CTI/flame retardancy/glow wire)

Presenters:
Dr. Tamim P. Sidiki – Global marketing director DSM Engineering Plastics
Dr. Loek Ribberink – Global product manager DSM Engineering Plastics

Tech seminar - On the road with high voltage

On the road with high voltage
To make electric vehicles appealing to consumers, battery-charging times need to come down. One way to achieve this is through ultrafast high-voltage charging, which can cut down charging time to about 20 min for an 80% full charge. Such high-voltage systems introduce new challenges for the materials used in the high voltage path carrying the electrical power from the charging plug all the way to the battery and e-motors. Engineers need to meet strict design parameters for dielectric strength, creeping, tracking resistance, and the ability to color code various electrical systems (high CTI/ Flame retardancy)

Dr. Tamim P. Sidiki – Global marketing director DSM Engineering Plastics
Dr. Hans Hoekstra – R&T manager DSM Engineering Plastics

Tech seminar - EMI Shielding with plastic: future of metal replacement in electrical cars

EMI Shielding with Plastic: future of metal replacement in electrical cars
EMI shielding and thermal management are becoming increasingly important in automotive electronics. Critical electronics systems like ECUs and power management modules are typically housed in metallic enclosures. The metal housing provides environmental protection for the board, dissipates the heat of the processor and power electronics to prevent over- heating. Such metal housings however are pretty heavy in weight. At the same time, it effectively shields EMI caused by adjacent onboard electronic systems as well as from outside the car that may interfere with the sensitive integrated circuits (ICs) leading to severe electrical failures. DSM’s portfolio of conductive plastics enable the replacement of full metal enclosures with shielding efficiencies of around 50-70bB of plastic thickness. Replacing die-cast aluminum housings by engineering plastics that combine thermal conductivity with electro-magnet interference can lead to weight reductions of 50%.
