KURARITY™

KURARITY™ is a novel acrylic A-B-A type block copolymer with ""MAM"" structure. (Methyl-methacrylate-Acrylate-Methyl-methacrylate).

Thanks to KURARAY's unique living-anionic polymerization, KURARITY™ is a very unique acrylic polymer having no reactive groups in it. This characteristic of KURARITY™ allows to manufacture adhesives without cross-linking process. This is particularly useful to formulate hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives (HM PSA), sometimes together with a tackifier and a plasticiser. Another feature of KURARITY™ is self adhesiveness. Different from other A-B-A type block copolymers such as SIS or SEBS, KURARITY™ can apply to the standard plastic molding processings without adding tackifiers or plasticisers. This contributes to manufacturing a adhesive film or sheet easily. KURARITY™ can also be an additive to convensional solvent base acrylic adhesives as a process aid (no harmful effect to the cross-linking process) or improver for some adhesive performance.

SEPTON™ BIO-series

In collaboration with the bioscience company Amyris, Kuraray has developed a new family of hydrogenated styrene farnesene block copolymers (HSFC) called SEPTON™ BIO-series. SEPTON™ BIO-series is synthesized from B-farnesene, a renewable monomer produced by Amyris. Through established fermentation processes, proprietary yeast strains developed by Amyris convert sugar sources such as sugarcane, into B-farnesene.

When B-farnesene is polymerized, it results in a unique chemical structure which has differentiated features from conventional hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers (HSBC). In comparison to HSBC, SEPTON™ BIO-series exhibits higher flow ability, good adhesion, lower hardness without plasticizer, good permanent and compression set, and improved damping properties over a wide temperature range. With this property set, SEPTON™ BIO-series lends itself to a broad range of applications, including: adhesives & sealants, gels, soft compounds, modifiers, nonwovens, films and foams. It is expected that SEPTON™ BIO-series will continue to expand and produce new market value to meet developing customer needs.

Prior to processing, the polystyrene end blocks are associated in rigid domains. In the presence of heat and shear such as during processing, the polystyrene domains soften and permits flow. Since SEPTON™ is a thermoplastic, it is recyclable.

SEPTON™ is a styrene thermoplastic elastomer developed by Kuraray's proprietary technology. SEPTON™ has the elasticity of rubber, yet can be molded like plastic by heating it. Applications:

SEPTON™ K series TPE Features Superior Bondability to Glass

Like a number of other plastic products, SEPTON™ and HYBRAR™ hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomers can easily be molded; however, they are also characterized by rubber-like elasticity and are widely replacing vulcanized rubber as a soft molding material. Combining Kuraray's accumulated polymer synthesizing technologies and alloy technologies, the SEPTON™ K Series material represents a new concept in elastomeric materials. Existing products require pretreatment with primer to obtain the bondability needed for use on glass and metal. SEPTON™ Q series (A light, flexible and durable TPE)

Based on 20 years of experience in the field of elastomeric block-co-polymers Kuraray developed a material with remarkable characteristics. This material is available as neat polymer – SEPTON™ Q series. Moreover an alloy technology applied onto this material which generates a novel class of TPE which enters the application areas of TPAE, TPEE and TPU. The alloys show advantageous processing properties and good performance in combination with polyolefins.

The new material first was presented under the name Q-Polymer. It is now on the market under the brand name SEPTON™ Q series. Its outstanding performance can be generated with Kuraray's own alloy technology that creates light and scratch resistant materials. These alloys work well together with various polyolefins.

The first commercial application after setting up the new material was in specialized soccer shoes. In this shoe sole a very good abrasion resistance is combined with the advantage of a light weight material. TPU shows a specific gravity level of 1.2 vs. 0.9 roughly for the SEPTON™ Q series alloy.

Our product TP-301 is a trans-polyisoprene, a synthethic Gutta-Percha which is a specialized rubber based on isoprene. The TP-301 is colorless, transparent and almost completely odorless.TP-301 has a function because of its crystallization temperature at 60°C and could be vulcanized as rubber.

TP-301 can be used in orthopedic applications like e.g. medical splint, as well as in tire industries to strengthen roll resistance. In rubber compounding TP-301 has function for performance improvement. It is co-vulcanizable with solid rubber such as NR, SBR, BR and EPDM using sulfur or peroxide.

Liquid Farnese Rubber (LFR)

Global demand for liquid is currently expanding, mainly for use in vehicle tires. Aiming to bolster our lineup of liquid rubber products, the Kuraray Group has focused its attention on new biomaterials. We recently developed a new material, liquid farnesene rubber (LFR), through an alliance with U.S. biotech company Amyris, Inc.

LFR will join liquid isoprene rubber and liquid butadiene rubber in the product lineup of our liquid rubber business. However, LFR uses a biomaterial derived from sugarcane, setting it apart from existing products.

Compared to isoprene or butadiene liquid rubber, LFR minimizes the rolling resistance. When added to the rubber compound for tires, LFR helps bind the molecules of the rubber and fillers. This reduces energy loss from shape deformation and friction, which improves fuel efficiency.

Mowital® G

Polymers of the Mowital® G series are amorphous thermoplastic polymers which are provided as granules with low residual water content (<0.5 weight-%).

Mowital® G grades are ideal both as a binding agent as well as dispersant. It can be used in varnishes and inks and it predestine them for successful use as dispersing agent for masterbatches or the colouring of polymers. The chemical structure provides a semipolar character of Mowital® G enabling the usage as a compatibilizer for colour pigments, inorganic fillers, like metal oxide or metal particles as well as carbon black. Mowital® G is colourless, transparent, and lightfast. These properties make them the preferred polymer for colour-neutral formulations with high colour-purity and/or transparency.

Mowital® G grades can be burned out without residue. Hence they are suitable as a temporary binder for e.g. powder-injection moulding processes.

Since Mowital® G is compatible with various plastics, such as PMMA, PA, PVC, ABS, or TPU, it is especially valuable for applications in masterbatch formulations. MOWIFLEX™

MOWIFLEX is a novel thermoplastic compound, especially designed to meet the requirements of thermoplastic processing. It can be processed using conventional plastic processing technology, such as blown and flat film extrusion as well as injection moulding. At the same time, MOWIFLEX has all the advantageous properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA): It is soluble in water, forms clear and glossy films and shows high tensile strength. MOWIFLEX can be processed as a single compound or as an additive to standard plastics such as PA and it allows for blow up ratios of up to 1:8. In contrast to PVA, it does not have to be pre-treated before thermoplastic processing. It is delivered as a ready-to-use product containing all the ingredients needed. The properties of the ®Mowiflex TC compound can be well adjusted to the requirements of the desired application.

Materials produced with ®Mowiflex TC provide excellent weldability and bonding, are easily printable and have a low electrostatic surface charge. Additionally, the compound is colourable, which makes it possible to process ®Mowiflex TC as a highly concentrated masterbatch. Due to its excellent water solubility, ®Mowiflex TC can be used as a temporary binder as well.

KURARAY POVAL™

Kuraray has developed polyvinyl alcohol-based suspending and anti dry-foaming agents especially for the needs of PVC manufacturers. In these applications polyvinyl alcohol is used as a protective colloid for the polymerisation of PVC. Kuraray’s primary and secondary suspending agents permit precise control of the grain formation and of the suspension of PVC particles.

Particularly the L-Series grades make it possible to precisely control the resulting structure and morphology.

Furthermore, the surface active performance can be widely optimised by selecting an appropriate combination of Kuraray’s suspending agents from the LM-Series. Kuraray’s secondary suspending agents (LM polymer) improve the porosity of systems based on Kuraray’s primary suspending agents. In addition to particle size and morphology the porosity is a decisive factor in the ability to absorb plasticizers.

Furthermore, Kuraray’s products enable one to accurately control additional parameters, such as:
