The CONVIMETER® records viscosity efficiently in process of fluids and pastes and can be used for adjustment control, also. Therefore it is a necessary auxiliary system for quality control. The substances can be of low and high viscosities but also newtonian and non-newtonian. Special for non-newtonian fluids it is necessary to record the behaviour of the whole structure of the medium. This is the advantage of CONVIMETER®.


The measurement is achieved with a macroscopic shear and low shear rates guaranteeing accurate determination of rheological characteristics. No bearings or moving seals in contact with substance. The circular motion of the sensor gives a pumping effect that provides a quick exchange of substance. Disturbances by granular particles are suppressed, no influence of magnetic particles.

Measuring Principle

A sensing device, moved by a drive shaft, moves on a circular route within the substance being monitored. Because of the inclined position of the device it may be called a gyratory motion. The torque transmitted by the drive shaft is proportional to the viscosity of the substance. A differential gear with a metering spring and an inductive transducer detects the torque. A flexible metal bellow surrounding the drive shaft forms a seal which is not only frictionless but also temperature and pressure resistant. The torque is developed in the small gap between the conical mantle of the sensing device and the protection sheath. The protection sheath also eliminates the influence of flow within the substance. The maintenance-free motor is enclosed within the removable head.

Control unit CV-D

The design of the film-pad and the program enable operation of the CONVIMETER® with its basic functions without knowledge of the program or the user's manual. The display is lit to enable good visibility. Viscosity is shown in mPas or Pas. Temperature is shown simultaneously if a thermometer PT 100 is installed near the sensor head. Also different auxiliary units are shown.

Anisothermal stress relaxation test for characterizing TPE, elastomers and polymers
With the TSSR-Meter conventional isothermal relaxation experiments can be performed as well as the temperature scanning stress relaxation (TSSR), an anisothermal stress relaxation method (AISR method). Using this method the mechanical and thermal properties of TPE, plastics and elastomers can be characterized. The TSSR-Meter is suitable for the development of materials for production support and quality control. With the increasing importance of TPE an important factor, especially in the automotive industry.

The comfortable measuring and evaluation software for Windows® allows automatic test execution, logs the data, puts them online in a clear colour chart and evaluates the measured data automatically. The data can be exported for further analysis from the application directly, for example in an Excel spreadsheet.

Test sequence

Two different measurement methods are possible with the TSSRMeter: the conventional isothermal relaxation measurement or the use of the TSSR method. The sequence of the measurement with the TSSR-Meter takes place in two steps: After placing the sample in the electrical heated test chamber, the initial strain (e.g. 50%) is applied. During a free selectable time period (e.g. 2h) at a constant temperature (e.g. 23°C), most of the short time relaxation processes appear. In a second step the anisothermal phase follows. The sample is heated up at a constant, adjustable heating rate (e.g. 2 K/min) to the predetermined temperature (up to 300°C). During both test phases, the instrument records the tensile stress as a basis for the evaluation. The software calculates the maximum operating temperature and the relaxation spectrum of the test material.


During the anisothermal stress relaxation, the area of the curve under the normalized force (F/F0) is determined with respect to the temperature and set in relation to the area of the idealized elastomer material. This relation is the TSSRIndex and a relative measure of the rubber like behavior of a TPE or elastomer material.

Crosslink density

The crosslink density of TPV or conventional elastomers can be identified from the relaxation spectrum without great effort, quickly and well reproducible. The TSSR-Meter can also be used to demonstrate the effects of different concentrations of crosslink agent on the degree of crosslink density.

Temperature limits

Within the relaxation spectrum three distinct temperature limits are set, T10, T50, and T90. The temperature Tx stands for the temperature at which the force ratio F/F0 has decreased about x% referring to the initial force F0. Each value represents a specific characteristic of the sample.


The TSSR-Meter is used for many applications, where mechanical and thermal properties are measured. The compression set can be predicted using a temperature limit by means of a linear correlation. Applications of TPE compared to carbon black filled elastomers can clearly be defined. For carbon black filled EPDM compounds additional information can be obtained by anisothermal stress relaxation curves. These characterize the interactions between polymers and carbon black. In addition, the thermal limits of commercial TPE materials can be displayed with the meter TSSR and the various TPE blends can be characterized with the different relaxation spectra. With the TSSR-Index, determined by theTSSR-Meter, materials can be assigned to individual product groups.


The TSSR-Meter is based on a patented procedure, which was developed at the University of Osnabrück under the direction of Prof. Dr. Vennemann. There is a close cooperation in the fields of development and application engineering.

It couldn't be simpler and the menu on the 7'' touch screen, which has been designed to cover every detail, also gives you precise instructions: weigh the sample, fill the test chamber and start the measurement. The AQUATRAC® Station does all the rest – this speeds up the analysis process and prevents operating errors. Doing as much of the user's work as possible this idea is also reflected in the device details. The AQUATRAC® Station software is highly intelligent! You can set up a user database and configure and determine who can access the product database, and define processing thresholds for the sample material. You can choose abort criteria in case measurement takes too long and material processing thresholds are exceeded. There is also the especially smart and time-saving option to abort the measurement if the sample only shows a previously defined amount of water per time unit. Scanning using defined temperature levels and stop times is a further highlight. As a result, it is possible to find the optimal measurement temperature for your product and to distinguish between surface, pore and core moisture. The measurement process is documented based on concrete curve plots. You can see an overview at all times and extrapolations are no longer necessary.

You can view the measurement status from a distance via an optional signal lamp; once the analysis is complete, on request the software can automatically move the data obtained to a database specified by you – using a network cable or optional WiFi. Your measurement result can be displayed in milligrams, percent and ppm. Earlier measurements can also be instantly displayed again – for instance if you wish to compare results in the same product batch.

And of course the device has many interfaces for accessories of all kinds – for instance, this enables you to directly connect precision scales and integrate them into the highly automated analysis process. The sample weight is used automatically. One of the most regular sources of errors during residual moisture analysis – the typing error – can be avoided once and for all.

While a challenge with other tools, this has now become very easy with the new analysis principle of dew point measurement. Device checks with calibration salts and/or water standards are now supplemented with a genuine, direct link to internationally approved average values which were calibrated in NIST or UKAS ac- credited laboratories. This will ensure that in future, your company will be able to meet all the necessary requirements, including in the field of residual moisture analysis, which modern quality assurance requires certified suppliers of high-quality plastic components to meet.

The AQUATRAC® Station offers all the comfort which can be expected from a modern high- end analysis device at the current level of network technology and which at the same time is ideally prepared for future requirements. A WiFi dongle can be attached to the AQUATRAC Station via the USB ports. This makes the device into a so-called access point in ad hoc or client mode. As such, it becomes a communication platform which can link several other devices, such as printers or other computers. The AQUATRAC® Station’s software is web browser-based, so if required, the output can also be read and controlled via any office computer.

In this way, firmware, language packages and the material database can of course also be updated without problems. The times when the device needed to be returned for a software update are definitely long since gone.
