High Viscosity Technology

General Description

Buss-SMS-Canzler offers a unique program of high viscosity processors for:

- Devolatilization
- Reaction
- Mixing
- Combinations thereof

These processors operate over a wide range of viscosities and residence times.

In addition to the longstanding and well known thin-film processors Filmtruder® and Viscon®, Buss-SMS-Canzler has developed single and twin shaft horizontal, large volume processors of the types Reactotherm®, Reasol®, Reacom® und Reavisc®.

Design criteria that determine which technology is used include:

- Residence time
- Viscosity
- Pressure
- Temperature
- Vapor volume
- Mixing requirement
- Melt vs. friable solids
- Capital cost
- Operational cost

Thin Film Evaporator, Wiped Film Evaporator


Since their introduction more than 50 years ago by Luwa and Samesreuther, today Buss-SMS-Canzler, Thin Film Evaporators, which are also frequently called wiped film evaporators or agitated thin film evaporators have become a generally recognised and accepted solution for difficult and demanding process problems in the areas of distillation, concentration, degassing, drying and reactions.

Buss-SMS-Canzler offers the widest range of different types of Thin Film Evaporators available worldwide, such as:

- different types of rotor to suit a wide range of different applications
- vertical or horizontal construction
- cylindrical or conical design
- counter or co-current working principle

Thin Film Evaporators differ in the following main technical features from other evaporator types:

- Continuous and trouble-free processing of viscous, fouling and contaminated fluids by high turbulence in the liquid film, which also reduces the required temperature difference accross the heating surface;
 - Gentle product treatment because of the short residence time and the narrow residence time spectrum in the whole equipment;
 - High evaporation performance because of high surface heat flux;
 - High evaporation ratio in a single pass;
- Minimum losses in case of product change because of the low hold-up.

Operating Principle

The Rovactor® is an efficient processor to dry cakes, powder and pellets. The operation is continuous and/or batch-wise offering residence times ranging from a few minutes to several hours.

The Rovactor® (Fig. 1) consists of a jacketed cylindrical or trough shaped body and a hollow rotating shaft fitted with hollow, slightly pitched discs.

Heating or cooling is effected indirectly by means of steam or a transfer fluid via the segmented rotor and body jacket (Fig. 2).

Product transport in the Rovactor® is tailored to product specific requirements by selecting the pitch of the rotor discs.

The level of filling is normally adjusted by a weir at the product exit.

Our manufacturing programe includes Rovactors® up to 300 m² heat exchange surface and up to 35 m³ working volume.

History of the Company

For many years Buss-SMS-Canzler GmbH has been a world leader in thin film evaporation, drying and high viscosity technology. Our expertise is based on technologies developed in-house and technologies acquired from Luwa AG.

Historical View

As a company Buss-SMS-Canzler can be traced back to Samesreuther & Co. GmbH founded in 1919, which from the 1950's onwards has specialized in thermal process technologies. SMS was the result of a merger between Samesreuther & Co. GmbH, Butzbach and Müller-Schuss GmbH, Siegen in 1964.

In 1972 the Butzbach business was acquired by Luwa AG, Zurich, Switzerland, giving rise to Luwa SMS, which was finally acquired by Buss AG, Pratteln, Switzerland, in 1983, when the company name changed to Buss-SMS GmbH Verfahrenstechnik.

In 1998, Buss-SMS with its headquarters in Butzbach, Germany and a branch office in Pratteln, Switzerland was sold to UPE Europe Holding GmbH, a 100% daughter of Universal Process Equipment, Inc. (UPE), Roosevelt, NJ, USA.

In February 2003 the management of Buss-SMS took over the company from Universal Process Equipment Inc.

In November 2003 Buss-SMS GmbH Verfahrenstechnik takes over the business divisions Thermal Separation Technology and Membrane Technology from Canzler GmbH, Düren. In order to demonstrate the positive integration to the public, the name of the company has been changed into Buss-SMS-Canzler GmbH.

All activities in the field of thermal separation technologies which were merged under the name Buss-SMS-Canzler, rely on over 50 years of experience accumulated by the companies Luwa, SMS, Buss and Canzler.
