BOPP & Heat Seal

As a leading supplier of polyolefins, we offer effective solutions for BOPP and Heat seal applications

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films are used in a variety of modern applications, including:

Flexible food packaging
Printing and lamination films
Metallised barrier films
Flower sleeves
Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape
Cable wrap and insulation

As one of the leading producers of polyolefins in Europe, we offer a range of high-performance homopolymers and heat sealing grades for BOPP films. True to our company's motto, we keep discovering new products and material solutions that help our customers realise continuous improvements when it comes to throughput and stretching ratios in manufacturing. What is more, Borealis innovations help reduce BOPP production costs.

Provider of high-performance homopolymers and heat sealing grades

Although the sealing layers are rather thin, they provide the BOPP films with surface functionality and play an important role for post-handling processes. Among the key properties of our heat seal grades:

Low seal initiation temperature (SIT)
Very good seal strength
Excellent hot-tack performance
Superior optical properties
Exceptionally low extractables providing:

Low tackiness at sealing jaws
Low blooming and thus good optical properties
Stable surface properties, perfect for metallisation

Well-balanced rheology to enhance an improved thickness profile
Easy stretching

Our newly developed Borealis TD310BF, TD315BF and TD320BF heat seal grades provide an excellent thickness profile when used in high-speed BOPP lines.

Borealis also supplies BOPP homopolymer products for the core layer, including:

Multi-purpose non-phthalate homo PP (HC101BF)
High stiffness and non-phthalate homo PP (HC110BF)

Polypropylene Blown Film

Better performance across a variety of applications

Our film industry customers and partners know they can rely on our PP grades thanks to their excellent performance and superior properties.

Recent polypropylene (PP) developments in regard to polymer structure (co-polymers) and special nucleation systems have made it possible to use PP in a much more economical way on blown film lines with air cooling. The latest breakthroughs in coextrusion technology now support the exploitation of the full potential of PP.

We have a grade to cover your application needs

Our film industry customers and partners know they can rely on our PP grades thanks to their excellent performance and superior properties.

High stiffness in blends or as coextrusion layer offers:

Downgauging potential
Very good conversion on packaging equipment
Good film flatness / punching quality

High heat deflection temperature enables:

Sterilisation up to 145°C, depending on individual PP grade and conditions
Hot fill applications

Good optical properties, including:

Surface gloss
High transparency

Liquid Packaging

As the major player in the extrusion coating market, liquid packaging encompasses applications used for short and long shelf life products, dairy as well as non-dairy. Design, flexibility, look and feel, printability (directly on the application versus labelling) and sustainability must all be taken in to account when packaging liquids. For manufacturers, this means ensuring safety and security of supply as well as growing the market to encompass new areas of development via innovation.

Reliable supply and lasting partnerships for long-term gains

As a reliable partner providing high quality materials with ensured quality consistency, we help our customers grow in their current markets and enter into new markets. Our successful customer collaborations have yielded such innovations as our recently launched CT7200 – a LDPE homopolymer produced with high pressure tubular technology. Our speciality coating grades enable our customers to gain in the long-term by achieving technical excellence, e.g. improved functionality and sterilisation options. At the same time, improving sustainability is essential in order to offer more environmentally-friendly options for board and paper coatings.

CT7200: our patented technological breakthrough

An LDPE produced on a high-pressure tubular reactor, CT7200 is a Borealis solution developed for extrusion coating products that will help the industry address the issue of the pending closure of autoclave plants. Our new high pressure tubular platform enables us to secure supply for the global extrusion coating market in full compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. CT7200 shares the high-quality organoleptics of currently available materials yet has numerous other advantages:

High zero shear viscosity contributes to improved sealing performanceImproved flowability enhances the adhesion to various substrates, even at lower processing temperaturesReduced energy consumption (motor load) at the same output rates results in improved sustainabilityGood optical propertiesLow gel levels

CT7200 is ideally suited for applications involving high-volume extrusion coating of boards and papers, liquid packaging, extrusion coating and lamination of different substrates and co-extrusion in multi-structures.

Providing excellence through experience

We have been a leading supplier of superior polyolefin plastics for advanced packaging and fibre solutions for over 50 years with a proven track record. Our Borealis proprietary technologies ensure the long-term supply of high-quality material for the extrusion coating industry locally as well as globally through our joint venture Borouge. Our deep application expertise and broad product mix enable us to develop the best products to address our customers' specific needs. We create and optimise solutions on our own pilot line, even offering a full Borealis solution, in order to provide our customer with the confidence that our knowledge and expertise will benefit them in the short- and long-term.
