By using the energy from beta or gamma rays, the material properties of plastic parts (radiation crosslinking) are improved and/or destroy any microorganisms that may be present on the product (radiation sterilization) are destroyed.
Enhancing Polymer Properties by Radiation Crosslinking
Radiation crosslinking gives standard and technical plastics the mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of high-performance plastics.
The most important polymers for an upgrading by crosslinking are polyethylenes, polyamides, PBT and special thermoplastic elastomers. In most cases, irradiation takes place in a second process step, after the moulding process (e.g. injection/extrusion/blow moulding/rotational moulding) has been completed.
