An 11-layer line from Hosokawa Alpine offers enormous flexibility. Regardless of their different viscosities, a wide range of raw materials can be processed in every layer, thus permitting completely new layer structures, e.g. for laminating film. Besides this, the 11-layer line from Hosokawa Alpine offers additional possibilities of optimally balancing out the film layers. Because of this, asymmetric film structures with polyamide for thermoforming applications, for example, can be produced with a significant reduction of the curling effect. Thanks to additional layers of PA, this kind of film is also more elastic and more uniformly formed at the edges after thermoforming. Thicker layers, for example of cheaper raw materials, can be achieved with an 11-layer blow film line in that the same material is processed with two extruders and thus in two layers next to each other. For a number of structures, even higher throughput rates can be achieved when compared with that of a standard 9-layer film.

And last but not least, the higher number of layers of the 11-layer line offers the possibility of realising completely new material combinations which can also mean that the overall layer thickness is reduced and thus a cost saving is achieved, or completely new products are generated which, for example, make later laminating steps unnecessary.

These days, film co-extrusion lines are used for most applications. The combination of different types of raw materials and the employment of Hosokawa Alpine's extremely flexible blown film lines makes especially cost-effective production possible. Extruders in the HXS product line are modular in concept and can be combined with each other. In this way, the co-extrusion blown film lines from Hosokawa Alpine can always be tailored precisely and optimally to the problem specification in hand.

A trend for 5-layer lines has been apparent since 2010. With 5-layer lines, the film thickness can be reduced at the same or better mechanical properties. Because there are more options in terms of layer distribution, expensive materials can be used more sparingly. Hosokawa Alpine 5-layer blown film lines constitute the gateway to the realm of barrier films with PA and EVOH, and are thus ideal for opening up new and interesting applications areas.

As a result of the standard barrier screws integrated into the mono extruders from Hosokawa Alpine, they are capable of processing every common polyolefin-based raw material such as HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, mLLDPE and PP. Hosokawa Alpine has been supplying monoaxial orientation lines (MDO - Mono Directional Orientation) since 1999 and has without doubt the greatest fund of experience with this technology. In the orientation process, a blown film is oriented between two rollers rotating at different speeds.
The orientation process provides users with the possibility of tailoring the film thickness, film strength, film elongation in machine direction, film stiffness, puncture resistance, shrink behaviour, tear resistance, folding behaviour, material density, brilliance, transparency, barrier effect and water vapour permeability exactly to their specific application. Hosokawa Alpine orientation lines are used inline for the production of both blown film and cast film.

During the orientation process, the film is necked in transverse direction, thus its width is also reduced. This "neck-in" causes the oriented film to become progressively thicker from the film centre towards both film edges. Up to now, these thicker film edges have had to be trimmed generously in order to achieve a uniform thickness profile on the reel and thus to ensure an optimum flatness of the film for downstream conversion processes.
To eliminate these disadvantages common to orientation technology, Hosokawa Alpine developed the patented TRIO System (Trim Reduction for Inline Orientation). Thanks to the TRIO system, the edge trim waste is significantly reduced, material is saved and the net output rate is increased. The entire process becomes more efficient.

50 µm High Barrier Film Structure with 11 Layers

Maximum flexibility in the world of Blown Film Production will be on display at the Dusseldorf fair grounds hall 16 booth D06. This is a K-show highlight you will not want to miss: A live demonstration of ALPINE’s 11 layer technology.

During the 8 days of the exhibition we will produce complex barrier film structures. The 11 extruders are arranged to minimize total footprint and the water cooled main drives are quiet and efficient. Alpine’s patented X-Die has been increased to 11 layers, maintaining the same film quality that you’ve come to expect from the X-Die.

ALPINE’s proven cooling systems ensures the highest possible output rates with maximum bubble stability. The total film thickness and individual barrier layers are measured and displayed by an NDC inline scanner. The line is equipped with our newest oscillating haul-off design with integrated annealing, specially designed for barrier films and manufactured at our subsidiary HOSOKAWA KOLB near Cologne.

Line Control is provided by the new ExVis 4.0 with our “One-Touch” Change System. ExVis 4.0 is operator friendly and includes full energy monitoring. As with all Alpine ExVis systems remote on-line support is available for quick equipment maintenance and trouble-shooting. ALPINE’s latest Winder with reverse wind capability and a smart roll handling system facilitates smooth roll and shaft changes.

Hosokawa Alpine supplies complete blown film solutions ranging from single extruder mono-lines to 11-layer barrier film lines for every Flexible Packaging application. We also offer our MDO monodirectional film orientation system with the patented TRIO (Trim Reduction in Orientation) that reduces edge trim waste by more than 50% and ensures exceptional film flatness for superior productivity in printing and laminating. HOSOKAWA ALPINE Aktiengesellschaft was founded as a family business in 1898 in Augsburg, Bavaria. The German mechanical engineering company advanced very quickly to become an internationally leading supplier on the sectors of film extrusion and powder and particle processing. The company was taken over in 1987 by Hosokawa Micron Corp., Osaka, Japan, a global leader in the field of powder and particle processing.

Around 30 million euros have been invested in the Augsburg location since 2008. These investments were channelled above all into the production department and the testing centres.As a result, the engineering and production of Alpine's high-tech machines and systems has become even more efficient.
