Plastic systems work at three levels:
- At the surface, permeable grass pavers and surface coverings let rain enter directly on site instead of running off.
- Below ground, modular soakaway crates (infiltration modules) – underground plastic hollow bodies – buffer heavy-rain peaks and release them into the soil with a delay. Compared with gravel-filled soakaways, these storage systems hold more volume in a smaller footprint and, depending on the design, can bear loads up to truck traffic.
- As a protective layer, geosynthetics such as filter fleeces prevent fine particles from clogging the pores, keeping the system functional over the long term.
Only the interplay of these levels makes a surface truly heavy-rain resilient.
