Camping furniture
Camping furniture is another important field of application for plastics. Materials such as polypropylene are often used to create lightweight yet robust pieces of furniture. The properties of polypropylene, including high rigidity and resistance to chemical influences, make it ideal for use in the great outdoors. The furniture can be easily transported and quickly assembled, which is a great advantage for campers. In addition, many manufacturers offer interesting designs made possible by the use of plastic.
Camping crockery: unbreakable and beautifully shaped
Plastics also play a central role in the manufacture of cookware and utensils for camping. Most camping crockery is made of melamine plastic, as a virtually unbreakable material is of course a great advantage when camping. The disadvantages are that melamine plastic must not be heated above 70 degrees Celsius, otherwise toxins will escape, and it is not scratch-resistant - a steak knife, for example, would leave notches on the plate. The advantages, however, are the porcelain-like appearance and reusability.
In addition to melamine camping crockery, there is also polypropylene. As a thermoplastic material, it has the advantage that it can withstand temperatures of up to 140 degrees Celsius, at least for a short time. It is also unaffected by alkalis and acids. Its contribution to the circular economy should also be mentioned, as it can often be melted down and reused.
Some suppliers now also offer ‘organic products’ made from plant-based materials such as PLA. PLA (polylactide) is obtained from plant sugars such as corn starch, manioc or sugar cane. It is therefore a biocompatible raw material.
