AISA Automation Industrielle

The future of toothpaste packaging is a recyclable plastic tube.

AISA

In recent years stakeholders of consumer goods businesses are demanding more sustainable packaging resource usage. Especially for products packed in plastic which hasn’t been recycled today.

Circular Economy
Consumer’s preferred packaging format for toothpaste has always been the squeezable tube, from metal tubes progress has transformed the toothpaste tube into a metal and plastic laminate structure widely used in the world today. Such laminates aren’t recycled today and rather incinerated in many countries. With today’s focus on sustainability, a circular economy model is desired, where packaging can be recycled and the material reused for packaging production. The largest toothpaste brand Colgate developed a solution where the post-consumer tubes can be recycled and the material reused for the production of HDPE bottles such as containing detergents, for example.

With the Brand owners of the largest global toothpaste brands, Colgate Palmolive, Procter & Gamble, GSK and Unilever adopting this circular economy model for toothpaste tubes in all major markets, a new standard was created and other consumer goods filled in tubes, cosmetics for example, will likely follow the same model.

Business opportunity
Such volume shifts aren’t without challenges, comprising risk and opportunities for the entire packaging supply chain business. Materials change, equipment has to be replaced or adapted and optimised for best efficiency, when running new recyclable tube packaging.

Aisa’s Role
As the leading supplier of tube production equipment for toothpaste and cosmetics in the world, Aisa has been at the forefront facing both challenges and opportunities resulting from this transition. Immersed into topics such as artificial intelligence and automation, our aim is not only to follow the packaging material transition but to lead tube packaging production into the future of the industry 4.0 evolution.
