Plastic and paper packaging group Mondi (Johannesburg / South Africa; www.mondigroup.com) has developed a recyclable thermoformed PP film for meat products manufacturer Hütthaler (Schwanenstadt / Austria; www.huetthaler.at). Mondi used a solution that provides a barrier to protect the food and extend its shelf life the coextruded material includes a top and bottom web with an internal barrier layer that comprises less than 5% of the entire structure.

The German institute for recyclability and product responsibility Cyclos-HTP (Aachen; www.cyclos-htp.de) awarded the film its highest classification for recyclability, AAA. Part of the film is supplied by Mondis Styria plant in Austria, which has also been awarded AA+ for food safety by the British Retail Consortium (London; www.brc.org.uk).

Earlier in July, Mondi announced it was expanding production capacity at its Aramil and Pereslavl-Zalessky plants in Russia (see Plasteurope.com 16.07.2020). In April, the group announced it would not be proposing to pay a final dividend to shareholders in light of the coronavirus. The group saw revenues from its flexible packaging division stagnate in 2019 at EUR 2.71 bn, while overall group sales dipped 3% to EUR 7.27 bn (see Plasteurope.com 19.03.2020). Its half-yearly results are to be announced on 6 August.
