DOW: Introduction of recyclable BOPE films in EMEA / Rival to BOPP and BOPET

Following the successful launch of its tenter frame biaxially oriented PE (TF-BOPE) films in Asia-Pacific, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, a subsidiary of US-based Dow (Midland, Michigan; www.dow.com), has now made them available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Designed for recyclability, the PE-based linear low, medium and high-density packaging films enable downgauging and offer an alternative to rival materials BOPP and BOPET, while displaying properties such as toughness, stiffness, thermal resistance and excellent optical performance, Dow said.

Applications range from downgauged frozen-food films to triplex laminates without BOPA and duplex PE-based laminates used for pre-made pouches for home and personal-care products.

The TF-BOPE has been developed by combining Dows Innate TF80 technology with the production knowhow and experience of leading PE and BOPP producers Plastchim-T (Tervel / Bulgaria; www.plastchim-t.com) and Ticinoplast (Milan / Italy; www.ticinoplast.it), along with the processing knowledge of machine manufacturer Brückner Maschinenbau (Siegsdorf / Germany; www.brueckner.com). Producers from growth regions, such as Plastchim-T, are increasingly gaining ground in the global biaxial-oriented films market (see Plasteurope.com of 29.10.2020).

The main focus of our research work was to make BOPE a comprehensive offering and explore higher-density spaces that would make this replacement viable and robust, said Karlheinz Hausmann, global technical fellow at Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics. As a result, we have developed a unique blend approach that gives converters of BOPE the flexibility to tailor the film performance to the needs of their customers as effectively and economically as possible.

Jaroslaw Jelinek, global marketing manager for oriented PE technologies, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, added that the positive reaction of converters and brand owners in Asia gave them the confidence to commercialise films in the aforementioned regions.
