Asahi Kasei starts up polycarbonatediol plant in China

The new PCD plant has a capacity of 3,000 t/y and is owned by Asahi Kasei Chemicals Corp. (50 %) and Asahi Kasei (China) Co., Ltd. (50 %). Together with Asahi Kasei Chemicals' first 3,000 t/y plant for Duranol, located in its Mizushima Works in Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan, the company now has a PCD capacity totalling 6,000 t/y. According to the manufacturer, the product features greater compatibility than ordinary PCD and enables the production of polyurethanes with greater softness as well as exceptional heat and water resistance. Asahi Kasei says that Duranol has the leading share of the Asian PCD market for polyurethanes for synthetic leather in automotive interiors, PU coatings, and UV-curable polyurethanes. Demand for highly functional PCD is forecast to continue to grow briskly throughout Asia and especially in China.
