UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Borouge Phase 3 expansion on track for full operations by end of year

A joint venture of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Borealis, Borouge has successfully started up its third ethane cracker as part of the Borouge 3 expansion and has been producing on-spec ethylene since the middle of June. The cracker, which Borouge earlier this year predicted would begin production at the end of the 2014 first quarter, has the capacity to produce 1.5-million t/y of ethylene, and
complements the venture's existing 600,000-t/y and 1.5-million-t/y crackers at the Ruwais complex.

The expansion project also includes two Borstar enhanced polyethylene (PE) plants having a combined capacity of 1.08-million t/y, a 350,000-t/y low-density PE plant and two Borstar enhanced polypropylene plants with a total of 960,000 t/y of capacity. With completion, Borealis
will have increased its polyolefins capacity to nearly 4.5-million t/y.

"Although there is still much work to do, we are well on track to achieve full operation of the Borouge 3 expansion through the end of this year,” commented Borealis Chief Executive Mark Garrett.
