THAILAND: Rubber farmers demand same treatment as rice farmers

The government has recently announced it would give a handout of 1,000 baht per rai to rice farmers, as part of its economic stimulus package.

The rubber institute has said the administration should spend at least 40 billion baht in assistance funds on the rubber sector, claiming the move would add at least 200 billion baht in circulation for the economy.

Meanwhile, the National Farmers Council has proposed to the government a four-point measure aimed at helping rubber farmers. Among the measures are a one-time handout of 2,520 baht per rai and very low interest loans to rubber farmers. The council further explained that the administration should also limit the amount of rubber exports while seeking cooperation among rubber producing nations.

Lastly, the council said the government should establish several agencies to ensure the stability of rubber prices as well as the welfare of rubber farmers.
