SRI LANKA: Rubber cultivation in former war torn areas to be promoted

The government started a programme to encourage local farmers to grow rubber in the above districts one and a half years back, after experts found that the climate and soil conditions were favourable for rubber cultivation.

Later, authorities had identified land with an extent of 300 hectare each in Mullaitivu and Vavuniya for a special rubber cultivation project.

During the upcoming visits, Minister Samarasinghe would hold discussions with state officials, farmers and other stakeholders on promoting rubber cultivation in the former war torn areas.

He would hold a series of meetings at District Secretariats where, among other matters, an awareness programme on rubber cultivation too would be conducted for identified farmer recipients who would receive state help for the cultivation of rubber.
