Packaging regulations: London major issues strategy on municipal waste

With a watchful eye on 2012, the year the Olympics come to London, the city´s major Boris Johnson issued a new waste strategy in January, which also includes devising a road map towards a plastic-bag-free London and achieving zero municipal waste directly to landfill by 2025. The 174-page document outlines several measures to reduce the roughly 4m t of municipal waste produced in London each year.

Of this waste, plastics make up 7%, or roughly 279,000 t. The lobbying group London Councils (London / UK; www.londoncouncils.gov.uk), which backs Johnson's initiative, estimates that over 13 bn plastic bags are issued to shoppers in the UK each year, of which about 1.5 bn are given to Londoners alone each year.
