Calling it a "major boost for mixed plastics recycling capacity, the Packaging and Films Association (PAFA, Nottingham / UK; www.pafa.co.uk) has welcomed the UK government's decision to award a grant to specialist recycler WES Greenstar (Redcar / UK; www.thewesgroup.co.uk) to recycle an additional 20,000 t/y of mixed plastic household waste. The EUR 1.36m grant was awarded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP, Banbury / UK; www.wrap.org.uk).
PAFA chief executive Barry Turner said he hopes the grant will herald a turnaround in UK recycling practices. So far, he said, local authorities' performance has been measured in weight. As a result, lightweight plastic packaging largely have been ignored, despite their recyclability.
