Medical technology: UK market expected to contract slightly

The UK market for medical technology and equipment will contract slightly in 2010 and 2011, a new report by Germany Trade and Invest (gtai, Berlin / Germany; www.gtai.com) suggests. The decline can be explained partly by UK budget constraints, as a result of which the National Health Service (NHS) has had to roll back plans for capital investment. Growth in imports will likely be above the forecast overall market growth of only 1% in 2010.

A study by research group Market & Business Development (MBD, Manchester / UK; www.mbdltd.co.uk) predicts that the UK's medical equipment sector will grow from GBP 3.36 bn in 2009 to GBP 3.46 bn (around EUR 3.86 bn) in 2014, a cumulative gain of 3% over the five-year period.
