Medical demand for micro assemblies is surging

Strong growth for very small medical parts is driving innovation from molders, specialty design firms, machinery builders, and other suppliers.

Reasons for the growth include expanding capabilities to produce repeatable micro plastic features, trends toward miniaturization, and increasing awareness of the micro manufacturing world among medical device design engineers.

Molders can now produce dust-speck-size parts with thin walls that are just 0.001-0.0015 in. Micro parts with molded features such as dimples around 3 µm in depth and diameter are now possible, says Donna Bibber, CEO of Micro Engineering Services (MES), (Charlton City, MA).
