MD&M East: Calendered TPE challenges PVC

The battle to replace flexible PVC film in medical applications with other materials will ratchet up a notch with new technologies that will be shown at MD&M East in Philadelphia June 18-20.

One example is a collaboration by three leading players in the development of olefin elastomers that can match technical properties of PVC plasticized with phthalates, which have been challenged as unsafe by several leading health authorities, including hospitals such as Kaiser Permanente and Partners Healthcare.

The target applications are calendered PVC film currently used in fluid drainage and storage bags, cushioning bladders and surgical pouches. The three collaborators are O'Sullivan Films (Winchester, VA), Genesis Plastics Welding (Fortville, IN) and Teknor Apex (Pawtucket, RI).
