Flame-retardants and spray polyurethane foam (SPF)
Of greatest interest to the PU industry are the latest flame retardants offered by the Functional Chemicals business unit. A number of innovative products will be presented including the new Bayfomox spray polyurethane foam system. Other products include a range of halogen-free flame retardants that respond to the growing customer demand for alternatives to problematic additives. Levagard DMPP is also available as a good substitute for DMMP which will now be labelled as toxic under EU regulations.
Bayfomox in spray format
As a result of collaboration between Lanxess and FluidSystems GmbH the tried and tested FR construction material Bayfomox can now be applied as a spray foam. Even when applied in thin layers the foam provides outstanding fire endurance. Easy to apply in-situ, even to complex structures, the material cures quickly reducing downtime. One of its applications is its use as a low cost treatment for high traffic warehousing facilities, where it can provide superior thermal and acoustical insulation properties unavailable with conventional intumescent coatings. With freedom to alter mixing conditions significant adjustments can be made to the final mechanical and acoustic properties.
Halogen-free flame retardants
Levagard DMPP is a halogen-free flame retardant with an extremely high phosphorus content. Its low viscosity makes it highly suitable for use in rigid foam material, coatings and adhesives. Its flowability also allows it to replace plasticising mineral oils that add to the fireload of a product. The material is also compatible for use with inorganic materials such as aluminium trihydroxide. Levagard DMPP provides customers requiring a liquid flame retardant with an excellent alternative to DMMP. Levagard TEP is also a low viscosity, halogen-free flame retardant suitable for use in rigid PU/PIR foams.
Disflamoll DPK is a plasticising FR suitable for use in rigid and soft PU foams, TPUs, NBR, phenolic resins and the Lanxess elastomer Levapren. Compared to other materials it is based upon synthetic cresol, the material uses diphenyl cresyl phosphate and does not require labelling as toxic.
The company offers a range of solutions enabling users of phthalate-based additives to switch to alternative products if they so wish. As well as the established plasticiser Mesamoll, these include the new development Mesamoll TP LXS 51067 and the phthalate-free bonding agent TP LXS 51099.
