Italian machinery sector holding on, in spite of everything

Assocomaplast, the Italian trade association for manufacturers of plastic and rubber processing machinery, has presented the figures for 2013, showing that this sector is holding steady, despite what the association called "the lasting weakness in the domestic market."

According to Assocomaplast, which represents 165 makers of machinery, molds and equipment for the plastics and rubber industry, the stability in the market is due to strong growth in injection molding machines, where sales increased 32% to over €126m, in contrast to the negative trend for extruders and blowmolding machines.

The association said that the recovery in exports, particularly in the last quarter of 2013, which was marked by a last minute surge in December, meant that Italian manufacturers could compensate for the weaker performance the rest of the year. The very slight decline in demand from abroad, which represents over 65% of total production, resulted in a drop in revenue of 2.5% compared to 2012.
