Europen: Latest developments in European packaging landscape

In its February 2010 newsletter (issue 49), the European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment (Europen, Brussels / Belgium; www.europen.be) says German´s federal government has notified the EC of a proposal to label drinks packaging as re-usable or non-reusable. The German authorities argue that the proposed compulsory inscription of "Einweg" on all one-way drinks containers which are subject to the compulsory deposit and "Mehrweg" on refillable bottles would assist consumers in making a choice at the point of sale.

Meanwhile, a study on waste policy for the Irish government by consultancy Eunomia, including a section on mandatory deposits on waste, has been published. The scope of the study included identifying possible changes to policy to assist Ireland to move towards a sustainable resource and waste policy including minimising the creation of waste and self-sufficiency in the reuse and recycling of materials.
