Ebfrip: Brominated flame retardant emissions reduced in Europe

The emissions generated by companies manufacturing and using flame retardants decreased significantly in Europe last year thanks to a voluntary industry programme. As reported by the European Brominated Flame Retardant Industry Panel (EBFRIP, Brussels / Belgium; www.ebfrip.com), the latest data of the annual progress report issued by the "Voluntary Emissions Control Action Programme” (VECAP) shows a significant reduction in toxins emitted to air, ground and water.

In calculating the levels of emissions, VECAP adopts a "worst-case” scenario of emissions resulting from plastics and textile processing. Using this technique, the programme found that between 2008 and 2009, decaBDE emissions dropped from 3,432 kg to 1,220 kg in Europe, TBBPA emissions decreased from 815 kg to 189 kg, and HBCD emissions dropped from 2,017 kg to 309 kg.
