Combined coatings: Barriers and improved emptying behavior

The Fraunhofer IGB is using plasma technology to produce inorganic barrier coatings that act to block oxygen or water vapor and thus protect the product from oxidation or moisture. These glass-like barrier layers can be combined with a further layer that improves draining of the product when the packaging is emptied. The combined multifunctional coatings are ideal for plastic bottles for food that is oxygen-sensitive and viscous, such as ketchup, as well as for canisters in which chemicals are stored. They are also suitable for protein-based medicines that are still filled in small glass containers, despite the risk of breakage.
