Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC) - Innovative system for high-accuracy Coperion K-Tron loss-in-weight feeders

Coperion K-Tron will present a unique new Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC) system for their high-accuracy loss-in-weight feeders. The newly developed system offers a clever but simple electronic solution for accurate and steady pressure compensation in feeder hoppers and outlets.

The main advantages of the new system include improved accuracy and reliability as well as lower initial cost and easier installation compared to traditional mechanical pressure compensation systems. The modular design incorporates pressure sensors and electronics tailored to interact smoothly with Coperion K-Tron’s KCM feeder control system.

Retrofitting options for existing feeders are available. EPC can be installed on a majority of Coperion K-Tron gravimetric feeders in almost any application and all industries.

K-Vision Line Controller - K-Vision Line Controller maximizes your product quality while minimizing the need for direct supervision

K-Vision™ is a graphical operator interface for controlling up to 16 devices such as feeders or vacuum receivers in a single process line. K-Vision uses a 12.1-inch color LCD display together with a touchscreen as the primary operator input mechanism. In addition to the standard single page mode, it offers a quad screen display mode for viewing multiple pages on one feeder or single pages of multiple feeders simultaneously. Support for multiple languages is included and additional languages can be added on request.

Designed for simple operation and fast and easy start-up, K-Vision offers graphic visualization of process information, utilizing flexible, easy to use trend graphs. This feeder interface offers event logging and supports all of the different feeding control types for both continuous and batch operation. Easy to maintain, K-Vision software updates are possible by updating files on a compact flash card or by using a USB flash drive.

The K-Vision offers a variety of remote access options. A second K-Vision can be connected via Ethernet as a remote interface for visualization and control of feeder and line parameters. The K-Vision also comes with a VNC server, allowing any VNC client – on a PC, tablet or smartphone – connected to the same network to be used as a secondary user interface.

In addition to the current connectivity options, VNC, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, ModbusTCP, etc. the K-Vision now also has email capability. No optional hardware or software is necessary – it is a new standard feature. The K-Vision HMI can easily be set up to email a notification to one or more persons for important status changes or alarms. Log files can also be sent by email.

Smart Flow Meter - Gentle handling of bulk material flows

The Coperion K-Tron Smart Flow Meter is used in process applications that need reliable metering, registering or monitoring of bulk material flows.

With no moving parts, the K-SFM has no mechanical impact on the bulk material. It can be used in most industries for a wide variety of free flowing bulk materials, such as granules, chips, fibers and more.

Bulk material flows by gravity into the upper measuring channel, an inclined chute mounted on a force transducer where the force, acting perpendicularly on the chute is measured as mass. The bulk material then flows into the lower, vertical channel which determines velocity or acceleration rate. From the signals of these two sensors the flow rate is determined per unit of time.

What You Need to Consider in Specifying the Right Feeder for Your Process
Coperion K-Tron has a full range of feeders for the process industries. Following is a brief overview of the many choices you have in selecting the best feeder for your process needs.

Use Volumetric Feeders for Materials with Consistent Bulk Density
Volumetric feeders control flow by discharging a consistent volume of material. They are best used when bulk density is consistent, long term feed accuracy is not critical, and feeder performance does not need to be documented. Coperion K-Tron offers two types of screw feeders: the economical single screw volumetric feeder and the twin screw volumetric feeder for difficult materials. For free flowing materials, the award winning Bulk Solids Pump (BSP) offers perfectly linear, highly accurate volumetric feeding that surpasses all other feeders, yet is economical to buy and operate.

Use Volumetric Feeders in Gain-in-Weight Batching
In gain-in-weight batching, volumetric feeders sequentially discharge into a weigh hopper, providing a weight-based formulation. For better accuracy and faster batch times, use loss-in-weight batch feeders

Use Gravimetric Feeders for Greater Control, Long Term Accuracy and Continuous Processes
Gravimetric feeders control material flow by weight and therefore require a scale. Gravimetric feeding provides greater feed accuracy than volumetric feeding. In addition to improving process quality, gravimetric feeders can document material content in the end product. Also know as weigh feeders, gravimetric feeders are an essential enabling technology when it comes to feeding bulk material in many continuous processes.

Two Types of Weigh Feeders
In gravimetric feeding you can choose between weigh belt feeders and loss-in-weight feeders. Each feeder type has a very different approach to weighing material flow and has its unique advantages. The best choice really depends on your application needs.

Use Weigh Belt Feeders for Higher Feed Rates and Where Headroom Is an Issue
Weigh belt feeders form a bed of material on the belt as material is extracted from a supply hopper. As material moves along the belt, it is continuously weighed, and belt speed is adjusted to maintain the desired flow rate off the end of the belt.

Weigh belt feeders work best with granular materials. They offer high feed rates, fit in where headroom is a problem, and do not require a refill device. In general, weigh belt feeders cost less to install, but they require more maintenance than loss-in-weight feeders and do not handle dust as well.

Use Loss-in-Weight Feeders for Difficult Materials or High Accuracy at Very Low Feed Rates
In loss-in-weight feeding, the entire feeder is continuously weighed, and the rate of weight loss from the system is controlled for the desired feed rate.

Since the feeder must be refilled periodically, either manually or by automatic means, proper feeder sizing and refill strategy can be important factors to successful implementation. Loss-in-weight feeders lend themselves to modular design and a variety of metering devices specifically appropriate to the material being fed.

Typical metering devices include single or twin screws, a vibrating pan, or (for liquids) a pump or valve. Loss-in-weight feeders are able to handle difficult materials and can achieve very low feed rates.

Niederlenz, Switzerland (February 2016) --- Coperion K-Tron has introduced a unique new Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC) system for their high-accuracy loss-in-weight feeders. The main advantages of the new system include improved accuracy and reliability as well as lower initial cost and easier installation compared to traditional mechanical pressure compensation systems. Retrofitting options for existing feeders are available. EPC can be installed on a majority of Coperion K-Tron gravimetric feeders in almost any application and all industries.

In a closed feeding system, pressure build-up inside a feeder can significantly impair weighing accuracy. The commonly installed mechanical pressure compensation systems are sensitive to structural factors and machine alignment and may therefore be intricate or even unreliable. Coperion K-Tron has now developed a clever but simple electronic solution for accurate and steady pressure compensation in feeder hoppers. The modular design incorporates pressure sensors and electronics tailored to interact smoothly with Coperion K-Tron’s KCM feeder control system.

Depending on set-up and requirements, sensors can be positioned on the feeder hopper and, if required, on the material discharge tube. The software implements a self-optimizing compensation algorithm for best performance and dynamics identical to those of Coperion K-Tron’s SFT load cells, which allows for highly accurate feeding results, even in systems with perceivable pressure fluctuations.

A separate field evaluation kit allows for the assessment of potential pressure issues in existing installations.
