Thermoplastic lightweight engineering
Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH owns a major competency in the field of thermoplastic lightweight structures. In its technical facilities NMB has established the whole processing chain from unidirectional fiber reinforced Tapes (UD-Tapes) to thermoplastic lightweight structures, including a multiaxial tape layup machine for laying of UD tapes, a double-belt press for pre-consolidation and as well an injection press with a clamping force of 2,500 t. This facilitates enable the manufacturing of high performance composites from UD tapes to final component with minimal waste and in short cycle times on an industrial-scale.
With respect to lightweight engineering also sandwich structures are of particular interest. The combination of load bearing layers in connection with very light core materials enables the production of notably rigid structures. NMB focuses on the efficient, process-integrated production of polymeric sandwich structures and the development of extremely light, mechanically strong, resilient and high temperature stable core structures based on particle foams.
The very latest development in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth is a novel particle foam based on PBT, called E-PBT. It exhibits a density below 100 kg/m3 and a very homogeneous cell structure. The major advantage compared to common bead foams based on PP or PS is its outstanding performance at elevated temperature. E-PBT retains its dimensional stability up to 200 °C and has a service temperature approximately 100 °C higher compared to EPP.
